Rep. Seong Il-jong Introduces Bill to Bring Headquarters of Korea Power Corporation to Taean
Bill calls for integration of five state-owned power generation companies and establishment of the new headquarters in Taean, South Chungcheong Province
Rep. Seong Il-jong of the People Power Party, representing Seosan and Taean in South Chungcheong Province, has introduced a bill aimed at bringing the headquarters of the proposed Korea Power Corporation to Taean.
Rep. Seong announced on the 30th that he had introduced the “Korea Power Corporation Act” as a representative bill, with the goal of locating the headquarters of the newly established corporation in Taean County.
The move comes after the government recently announced plans to integrate five state-owned power generation companies, including Korea Western Power, into a new entity tentatively referred to as the “Korea Power Corporation.”
The bill introduced by Rep. Seong stipulates that the principal office of the Korea Power Corporation should be located in Taean County, South Chungcheong Province.
Under the proposed legislation, the five state-owned power generation companies would be integrated into the Korea Power Corporation, with the corporation’s principal office established in Taean.
Rep. Seong emphasized that Taean has hosted large-scale coal-fired power generation facilities for decades and is expected to face significant economic and social impacts as coal-fired power plants are gradually phased out.
According to Rep. Seong, the phase-out of coal-fired power generation could have a substantial impact on the local economy, employment, population and local government finances.
He also pointed to Taean’s existing energy infrastructure, including the headquarters of Korea Western Power and other facilities related to the power generation industry, as factors supporting the county’s suitability as the headquarters location for the new corporation.
Rep. Seong also said that Taean has prepared measures concerning the transfer of land for the potential establishment of the Korea Power Corporation headquarters.
“Taean County is a representative region that has hosted large-scale coal-fired power generation facilities for decades, and the gradual phase-out of coal-fired power plants is expected to have a significant impact on the local economy, employment, population and local government finances,” Rep. Seong said.
He added that Taean is an appropriate location for the headquarters because Korea Western Power and related power-generation infrastructure are already located there, while the county has also prepared measures for land transfer in connection with the potential relocation.
“Taean is facing a population decline crisis and has made sacrifices for the national interest for a long time. Consideration for balanced national development is urgently needed,” Rep. Seong said. “I will continue working together with the people of Taean until the end to bring the headquarters of the Korea Power Corporation to Taean.”
The bill is expected to draw attention during the National Assembly’s legislative review process. Key issues could include the organizational restructuring associated with the integration of the five power generation companies, the location of the new headquarters, balanced regional development and support measures for communities affected by the transition away from coal-fired power generation.
