전남광주통합특별시는 10월 1일 화순하니움문화스포츠센터에서 민방위대 창설 제51주년 기념식을 개최하고 시민 안전을 위한 대응 역량과 협력 의지를 다졌다고 발표했다. 이번 행사는 통합 후 처음으로 전남과 광주 지역 민방위 관계자들이 한자리에 모인 자리로, 통합방위위원 및 시군구 부단체장, 민방위대원 등 600여 명이 참석했다.
1975년 창설된 민방위대는 각종 재난과 사고 발생 시 주민 보호 및 피해 수습·복구 활동에 앞장서 왔다. 이날 기념식은 유공자 표창, 기념사, 결의문 낭독 등의 순서로 진행됐으며, 순천시 여성지원민방위대가 행정안전부 장관 표창을, 강진·무안·장흥·화순군이 통합특별시장 단체 표창을 각각 수상했다.
전남광주통합특별시는 하나로 뭉친 민방위 대응 체계를 바탕으로 재난 대응 능력을 한층 끌어올리고, 지역사회 연계를 통해 시민이 체감할 수 있는 안전한 주거 환경을 지속 구축해 나갈 방침이라고 밝혔다.
