순천시(시장 손훈모)는 순천 낙안읍성의 대표적 전통 경관인 초가를 단장하여 고즈넉한 전통 마을의 아름다움을 선보이고자 초가이엉잇기 사업을 추진한다고 발표했다. 벼 수확 철을 맞아 낡은 이엉을 제거하고 새 볏짚을 얹는 이번 정비 작업은 전통 생활문화 계승과 역사적 가치 수호를 목표로 진행된다.

이번 작업은 낙안읍성 정비 사업 중 최대 규모로, 관내 초가가옥 301동을 대상으로 총 13억 7천만 원의 사업비가 투입된다. 주민 주거환경을 쾌적하게 다듬는 동시에, 새 단장을 마친 초가지붕과 정겨운 돌담길이 조화를 이루도록 마을 경관을 살려낼 계획이다.

특히 작업이 이뤄지는 정취는 오는 24일부터 25일까지 열리는 '제31회 순천낙안읍성 민속문화축제'와 어우러져 한층 완성도 높은 볼거리를 안겨줄 전망이다. 순천시는 정비 작업을 차질 없이 마쳐 낙안읍성만의 독보적인 문화 자산을 정성껏 가꿔나갈 방침이라고 밝혔다.
