The Korea Institute of Aids to Navigation (K-AtoN, President Kwang-yeol Park) announced on the 9th that along with the opening of the '3rd Korea Lighthouse Week', various participatory programs—such as the AR Stamp Tour and the Visiting Lighthouse School—are gaining explosive popularity among summer vacationers, students, and parents.
'Korea Lighthouse Week' is a flagship marine culture festival co-hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and K-AtoN for two weeks from July 1 to 14 to commemorate 'World Lighthouse Day.' Designed to remind people of the importance of lighthouses in securing maritime safety and to promote the charm of ocean culture, the festival features hands-on experiential programs that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, from children to adults.
The 'AR Stamp Tour', which is drawing the most enthusiastic response in this year's festival, is a unique challenge that adds advanced AR (Augmented Reality) technology to the romance of the blue sea, allowing participants to explore beautiful lighthouse maritime cultural spaces. Anyone can easily participate by scanning the QR codes placed at the lighthouse sites or accessing the dedicated website via a smartphone link. Since the AR game missions can only be activated by physically visiting nine designated lighthouse maritime cultural spaces across the country, it is stimulating the competitive spirit of 'lighthouse enthusiasts' nationwide.
The missions vary by lighthouse. Participants automatically receive stamp authentication upon clearing adventurous AR game missions, such as 'Catch the Sea Fog!' themed around ocean mist, 'Catch the Crabby!' for catching crabs, and 'Find the Treasure!' to discover hidden luck. The tour operates until September 30. Completion of all nine lighthouse locations rewards participants with a meticulously prepared souvenir set, while visiting just two locations earns a cute 'Lighthouse Badge,' a special giveaway commemorating Lighthouse Week.
The scene at the 'Visiting Lighthouse School' is also buzzing with excitement from children. This educational program visits 20 kindergartens and elementary schools in the Busan area during the festival period to teach children about the unique functions of lighthouses, the importance of aids to navigation, and their cultural value in a fun, child-friendly way. Providing both education and entertainment to the growing generation, the Lighthouse School has gained immense popularity among teachers and parents, leading to an early closure of pre-registration.
