[여수/CTN]하성매 기자= 여수시 관계자는 "이번 정비사업을 통해 유족과 시민들이 보다 안전하고 엄숙한 분위기 속에서 위령비를 찾을 수 있게 됐다"라며 "앞으로도 여순사건 유적지의 안전 관리와 보존을 위해 지속적으로 노력하겠다"라고 밝혔다.
여수시(시장 서영학)는 만흥동 여순사건 위령비 주변의 낙석 위험을 해소하고 안정적인 참배 환경을 조성하기 위해 추진한 '여순사건 위령비 낙석방지 정비사업'을 완료했다고 10월 12일 발표했다. 이번 사업은 지난해 만흥동 149-6 일원 위령비 주변에서 발생한 낙석으로 인한 추가 피해를 예방하고 방문객들의 안전을 지키기 위해 실시됐다.
여수시는 재난관리기금을 신속히 투입하여 낙석방지책을 설치함으로써 안전사고 위험을 차단하는 한편, 배수시설 정비와 참배 공간 확장을 함께 진행했다. 특히 사업 추진 과정에서 여순사건 여수유족회와 시민추진위원회의 건의를 적극 반영, 기존 시설물의 훼손 및 이설을 최소화하고 현장의 자연환경을 최대한 보존하는 방식으로 설계를 변경·시행했다.
여수시는 앞으로도 역사적 아픔이 서린 여순사건 관련 유적지 전반에 대한 체계적인 정비와 지속적인 안전 관리를 이어갈 방침이라고 밝혔다.
