전북특별자치도는 보건복지부의 국립의학전문대학원 남원 설립 확정 발표에 따라 1일 도청 기자회견장에서 이원택 도지사, 김희수 도의회 의장, 양충모 남원시장 등이 참석한 가운데 합동브리핑을 열고 2030년 개교를 목표로 한 로드맵을 발표했다. 지난 2018년 서남대 의대 폐쇄 이후 8년간 난항을 겪었던 국립의전원 설립 사업이 마침내 행정적·법률적 결실을 맺은 것이다.
남원시 월락동 일원 6만 4,792㎡ 부지에 들어설 국립의전원은 국가가 직접 운영하는 4년제 대학원으로, 연간 입학정원은 100명 규모다. 학생에게는 등록금과 기숙사비 등 학비 전액이 국비로 지원되며, 졸업 후 공공의료기관에서 15년간 의무복무하게 된다. 도는 남원의료원을 500병상 규모로 단계적 확충하고 '국립중앙의료원 남원병원'으로의 전환을 정부와 협의해 실습 환경을 대폭 강화할 계획이다.
