[정읍/CTN]최동주 기자= 정읍시가 역주행 등 사고 위험을 줄이기 위해 옹동면 오성교차로에 회전교차로 설치를 완료했다고 발표했다.
옹동면 오성리에 있는 이 교차로는 태인면과 전주 방면 국도 1호선, 옹동면으로 통하는 주요 길목으로 대형 차량의 통행이 잦은 곳이다. 기존에는 신호등이 없는 교차로 구조상 역주행이 자주 발생해 사고 우려가 컸다.
시는 도비 2억 원과 시비 2억 원 등 총 4억 원의 사업비를 들여 지난 6월 공사에 착수해 9월 18일 설치를 마쳤다. 공사에 앞서 도로교통공단, 정읍경찰서, 전북특별자치도와 함께 사고 원인을 면밀히 분석하고 현장 여건에 맞는 맞춤형 개선 방안을 마련했다.
새롭게 조성된 회전교차로는 차량이 한 방향으로만 회전해 나가도록 유도해 역주행을 근본적으로 차단하며, 교차로 진입 시 자연스럽게 서행을 유도하도록 설계되었다. 또한 중앙 교통섬에는 밤에도 운전자가 교차로 구조를 쉽게 인식할 수 있도록 LED 시선유도등을 설치해 야간 안전성을 극대화했다.
정읍시는 이번 회전교차로 개통으로 교차로 내 사고 위험이 획기적으로 줄어드는 것은 물론, 신호 대기 시간이 줄어 차량 흐름도 한층 원활해질 것으로 기대하고 있다.
