Traffic Congestion Eased on Magog Commute Routes; Seoul Establishes 'Seoul Design Honors'
Existing Road Spaces Strategically Reconfigured to Secure Additional Straight-Through Lanes from Gayang Underpass to Yangcheonhyanggyo Station
Signal Timing Extended by 4 Seconds and Lanes Redesigned: Chronic Bottlenecks Solved Efficiently Without Large-Scale Expansion
First Local Government-Led 'Seoul Design Honors' Launched; Open Call Begins for Designers, Corporations, and Organizations Driving Urban Innovation
Traffic Flow Drastically Improves on Gangseo-ro, Easing Commutes to Magog Industrial Complex and LG Science Park
[SEOUL/CTN] Reporter Ga Geum-hyeon = Traffic congestion along Gangseo-ro, long notorious for chronic delays for commuters heading to key business districts such as the Magog Industrial Complex and LG Science Park, is set for major improvement. By securing additional straight-through lanes that link major arterial pathways and optimizing traffic signal timing, the frustrating daily commutes of local drivers will be significantly alleviated, South Korea¡¯s leading internet newspaper CTN reporter Ga Geum-hyeon reported.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it has implemented a tailor-made traffic improvement project on the Gangseo-ro section, spanning from Olympic Dae-ro through the Gayang Underpass to the Yangcheonhyanggyo Station Intersection.
Such traffic improvement initiatives offer the critical advantage of resolving bottlenecks and upgrading intersection safety by efficiently reconfiguring existing road layouts, entirely avoiding the massive budgets required for large-scale physical road expansions.
Gangseo-ro is a vital auxiliary arterial road directly tied to Olympic Dae-ro, serving as a primary corridor that links critical industrial hubs and corporate zones, including the Magog General Industrial Complex and LG Science Park. However, due to the rapid development of the Magog District and the accompanying spike in daily traffic, severe gridlock had become a daily reality on the stretch heading from the Gayang Underpass toward Yangcheonhyanggyo Station.
In response, Seoul formulated an on-site, practical traffic resolution focused on widening straight-through lanes and fine-tuning signal operations. The final blueprint was selected and deployed following thorough coordination with relevant authorities, including the Gangseo-gu Office, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, and the Gangseo Police Station.
Key Infrastructure Upgrades by Section
Lane Configuration at Gayang Underpass Entrance: The layout has been transformed from its previous structure of one left-turn/U-turn lane and one straight lane into a two-lane straight-through system. This change eliminates the chronic bottleneck where vehicles were forced to squeeze into a single lane, vastly expanding the traffic capacity leading from Olympic Dae-ro and Gangseo-ro toward Yangcheonhyanggyo Station and the Magog District.
Lane Expansion in Front of Dae-a Apartments Intersection: The straight-through capacity has been increased from two lanes to three, alongside the implementation of a dedicated pocket lane for left turns and U-turns. This allows straight-through traffic to pass through the intersection with far more breathing room than before.
Signal Optimization at Yangcheonhyanggyo Station Intersection: The duration of the straight-through green light heading toward the Magog District has been extended by approximately 4 seconds, maximizing the synergistic effect of the newly widened lanes.
Notably, Seoul has consistently targets high-congestion zones. Last year, the city carried out similar low-impact traffic improvements, including the lane expansion on Gayang-daero, the extension of queuing lanes at the Chung-Ang University Hospital entrance intersection, and the restructuring of Junggye Station Intersection by removing double stop lines.
Kim Sang-shin, Head of the Traffic Operation Division at the Seoul Metropolitan Government, stated, "We are continuously optimizing the driving environment in bottleneck areas through swift lane reconfigurations and precise signal adjustments. Moving forward, we will look beyond mere congestion relief to deliver site-centric traffic management that prioritizes driver safety and convenience."
Seoul Establishes 'Seoul Design Honors' to Spark Urban Innovation; Nominee Search Begins
In parallel with its urban infrastructure upgrades, the Seoul Metropolitan Government is introducing the inaugural 'Seoul Design Honors' this year. The newly minted award aims to discover and celebrate the key visionaries who have contributed significantly to the growth of the design industry and the advancement of public policy.
As the first professional design award system launched by a South Korean local government, the 'Seoul Design Honors' stands as a symbolic initiative designed to back Seoul's urban competitiveness and solidify its status as a global design leader. Through this framework, the city aims to reposition design not just as an aesthetic tool, but as a core public asset that reshines industries, public policies, and the overall quality of daily life for citizens.
With this system, Seoul intends to lay a sustainable foundation for the broader design ecosystem and systematically uncover initiatives that have elevated regional industrial strength and improved citizens' well-being.
The open call targets individuals, businesses, and organizations that have made remarkable contributions to Seoul¡¯s design sector and policies. The awards are divided into three distinct categories: ¡ã 'Seoul Designer' (Individual), ¡ã 'Seoul Design Company' (Corporate), and ¡ã 'Seoul Design Organization' (Group). A total of 12 Seoul Mayoral Commendations will be granted.
To foster a wide net of innovation, the awards carry no regional restrictions. Any individual, company, or organization that has directly or indirectly driven the growth of Seoul's design sector is eligible to apply or be nominated. The evaluation will focus strictly on the caliber of work and the tangible impact made on Seoul's design development, regardless of where the applicant is headquartered or primarily operates.
Application Guidelines and Fair Evaluation Process
Submission Deadline: June 19, by 6:00 PM KST (Self-nominations and third-party recommendations are both accepted).
How to Apply: Applicants or nominators must submit official achievement records, portfolios, and supporting documentation online via email.
Evaluation Phases:
First Round: Focuses primarily on the level of contribution to Seoul¡¯s municipal administration, professional expertise, and execution quality.
Second Round: Evaluates alignment with Seoul's core values, innovativeness, social value, market ripple effect, and broader external impact.
Following these rounds, the city will implement public verification by citizens and a formal review by the public commendation committee to guarantee transparency and strict objectivity.
The Seoul Design Honors deliberately looks beyond superficial design achievements, placing heavy emphasis on broader public values such as raising urban brand status, championing social inclusivity, and nurturing a sustainable industrial ecosystem. This introduces a fresh policy direction that treats design as a strategic asset for urban policymaking.
Winners will be honored at a ceremony integrated with the Seoul Design International Forum, providing them with an invaluable platform to network with top-tier domestic and global design professionals. This alignment is expected to act as a vital launchpad for sharing Seoul¡¯s premier design breakthroughs with the international community, while broadcasting the city's design policy strengths to the world.
The launch of the honors aligns closely with the central government's recent push to revitalize the design sector, including the official designation of 'Design Day.' Seoul intends to use this momentum to establish practical municipal promotional tools and cultivate deeper public appreciation for the socioeconomic value of design.
Choi In-kyu, Director General of the Design Policy Bureau at the Seoul Metropolitan Government, noted, "The Seoul Design Honors is a deeply meaningful step toward officially honoring the dedication of those who have quietly forged Seoul's design competitiveness over the years. This will serve as a platform of appreciation to document past milestones, while helping us establish a 'Seoul-style Design Standard' based on the accumulated pool of excellence. We will offer steadfast support to ensure design¡¯s public and industrial potential can flourish, helping Seoul leap forward as a world-class design capital."
