A True Elder of Our Time: Ga Gap-son, Chairman of the Institute for Two Loyalties and One Filial Piety Culture
“I have protected my life with nothing but honesty.”
Throughout our lives, we meet countless people, build relationships, and share our lives with others.
Among those we encounter are people of different ages and backgrounds, including elders, younger people, peers, and individuals from virtually every sector of society.
Yet in today's society, we often realize that simply being older does not necessarily make someone a true elder.
There are not many people who put others before themselves or speak out against what is wrong in society.
On the 28th, the reporting teams of CTN, Education Times, and Korea Economy News visited Gangnam Resortel in Seocho-gu, Seoul, where Ga Gap-son, Chairman of the Institute for Two Loyalties and One Filial Piety Culture, was staying.
We explored why Chairman Ga is regarded as a true elder of our time, focusing on his words, philosophy, career, and contributions accumulated throughout his life.

■ Where was Chairman Ga Gap-son born, and where did he study?
Chairman Ga Gap-son was born on January 8, 1938, in Daeyul-ri, Eunha-myeon, Hongseong-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, as the second son of his father, Ga Jae-seong (Wanson), and his mother, Seo Gap-sun.
His elder brother served with the 1st Infantry Division's reconnaissance battalion and died in the line of duty. He is currently buried at the Daejeon National Cemetery.
Chairman Ga graduated from Eunha Elementary School, Hongseong Middle School, and Hongseong High School. He later earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Sungkyunkwan University.
He majored in law and studied labor law. In 1974, he earned his master's degree with a thesis on the introduction of a minimum wage system. He subsequently studied commercial law at Myongji University Graduate School and earned a doctoral degree in 1992 with a dissertation on corporate mergers and acquisitions.
Chairman Ga's first application for university admission was to Seoul National University's College of Physics, where he hoped to study political science. However, he was unsuccessful and subsequently entered Sungkyunkwan University.
■ What roles did Chairman Ga Gap-son play throughout his career?
After graduating from Sungkyunkwan University, Chairman Ga immediately enlisted in the military.
He still regards his military service as one of the most fortunate turning points in his life. He was assigned to Army Headquarters and served as an aide to General Lee Min-woo.
General Lee Min-woo later served as commander of the 5th Corps and as the 17th Vice Minister of National Defense, from December 17, 1974, to October 2, 1978.
Even after Chairman Ga was discharged from the military in 1964 and joined Hanwha Group as an entry-level employee in 1965, he continued commuting from General Lee's home.
When Chairman Ga married in 1966, he and his bride also began their newlywed life in the general's home. This illustrates the level of trust General Lee placed in him.
Even nearly six decades later, Chairman Ga says that meeting General Lee was a great blessing and that he considers himself a person who was fortunate to have encountered a mentor who showed him great kindness.
This story alone offers a glimpse into Chairman Ga's character and sense of gratitude.
After joining Hanwha Group in 1965, he worked at 11 affiliated companies, gaining recognition as a problem-solver within the group. In particular, while serving as head of the finance section at Hanwha Group headquarters, he earned a reputation for honesty and integrity.
He recalls that he felt especially proud that Chairman Kim Jong-hee and his wife recognized and trusted him for his honesty.
Starting as an ordinary employee, Chairman Ga became President and Representative Director of Hanwha Distribution in 1991. In 1996, he served as Vice Chairman and Representative Director. He submitted his resignation, saying there was little left for him to do, and after leaving the company on October 10, he served as an adviser for two years before finally parting ways with Hanwha.
Although the Asian financial crisis struck Korea in 1997, he recalls that he was treated as a special executive within Hanwha and was able to leave the company without suffering any particular disadvantage.
During his tenure at Hanwha Distribution, Chairman Ga expanded the company's nationwide retail network to 57 stores. He is also credited with establishing some of Korea's earliest luxury-goods sections in department stores.
In 1991, he established luxury sections at Jamsil Department Store and Gloria, creating spaces where luxury brands from around the world could be displayed and sold.
■ What businesses did Chairman Ga Gap-son lead?
After ending his corporate career as an adviser to Hanwha Group, Chairman Ga used his expertise to acquire the Cheongju Department Store through a public auction in 1999. He operated it for seven years before transferring it to Lotte in 2006.
At the time, the company reportedly paid approximately KRW 7 billion in corporate taxes, reflecting the scale of the business he successfully managed.
He later acquired, through a public auction, a property consisting of approximately 1,200 pyeong of land and a building with a total floor area of approximately 10,000 pyeong in the center of Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi-do. He became Chairman and CEO of Metro Family and continued to operate the business until transferring it to a third party in September 2023.
At the age of 86, he brought his active business career to an end.
Now in his late 80s, Chairman Ga's decades-long career in Korea's distribution industry represents a significant chapter in the history of Korean business.
■ Chairman Ga Gap-son's family
Behind Chairman Ga's active career and achievements was the support of his wife, Jeon Cheong-ja, who is 81.
Mrs. Jeon graduated from Muhak Girls' High School and earned a degree in Home Economics from Sookmyung Women's University. A devout Catholic, she is described as having devoted herself to her faith while providing strong support for her husband.
Her importance in Chairman Ga's life is also reflected in his book, It Was Wonderful to Have Met You.
His affection for his wife is particularly evident in the fact that he writes and gives her a letter every year on their wedding anniversary.
The couple has two sons and one daughter, all of whom earned master's or doctoral degrees in the United States.
Their eldest son currently teaches graduate students at the Graduate School of Law at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. Their second son is a professor in the Department of Political Science and Diplomacy at Dankook University. Their daughter is a professor in the Department of Tourism Management at Kyonggi University.
■ What has Chairman Ga Gap-son contributed to society?
▲ Contributions to the development of the Suzhou Jia Clan Association
Chairman Ga is regarded as one of the important figures in the Suzhou Jia Clan Association.
Since the mid-1970s, while working at Hanwha Group, he regularly participated in ancestral ceremonies for the Suzhou Jia clan and generously supported the development of the association.
In particular, during the construction of the Suzhou Jia Clan Association's community center, he personally contributed and encouraged relatives and members of the clan to participate in fundraising. Together with the then-chairman of the association's Gyeongin branch, he helped raise approximately KRW 60 million toward a total construction fund of about KRW 300 million.
His contributions did not stop there.
He donated approximately 3,000 pyeong of land he owned in Pado-ri, Sowon-myeon, Chungcheongnam-do, to the Suzhou Jia Clan Association and even covered approximately KRW 5 million in costs associated with transferring ownership.
He has also supported the annual Two Loyalties and One Filial Piety National Writing Contest, organized by Jeokdol Literary Society, donating approximately KRW 3 million to KRW 5 million each year. Through these efforts, he has helped promote the history and values of the Suzhou Jia clan.
On November 18, 2021, he founded the Institute for Two Loyalties and One Filial Piety Culture.
The institute was established as a foundation for collecting and preserving historical records, artifacts, and materials related to the Suzhou Jia clan; translating and publishing Seokhojip; organizing the Two Loyalties and One Filial Piety National Writing Contest; discovering historical figures from the clan; laying the groundwork for a digitized electronic genealogy; and establishing cooperation and joint research with outside experts.
As the institute's inaugural chairman, he said he was deeply honored that the organization had been established to commemorate and carry forward the spirit of loyalty and filial piety embodied by Ga Yu-yak, the founding ancestor of the Suzhou Jia clan.
He also stated that through the institute, he would do his utmost to preserve and develop the spirit of loyalty and filial piety—the fundamental values of humanity that he believes can serve as a model for people around the world—and contribute to the advancement of the Suzhou Jia clan.
His dedication to the clan continues to this day.
▲ Fostering future generations
Support for Sungkyunkwan University Law School, Eunha Elementary School, and Hongseong High School
Chairman Ga has established a 300-seat reading room named after him at Sungkyunkwan University's Law School.
Since March 2016, the Ga Gap-son Scholarship has selected one incoming law student each year based on factors including family circumstances and admission results. The scholarship covers the student's full tuition and admission fees for the first semester, amounting to approximately KRW 10.435 million.
He has also provided generous support to Eunha Elementary School and Hongseong High School in his hometown, contributing to the development of future generations.
▲ Giving back to his hometown
Chairman Ga received a commendation from residents of Eunha-myeon, Hongseong-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, in recognition of his longstanding contributions to the development of the area.
The commendation was unanimously approved at the 2nd General Residents' Meeting of Eunha-myeon.
Having served as honorary head of Eunha-myeon for 13 years, he has contributed to the local community in numerous ways, including support for wildfire recovery in Seobu-myeon, donations to the Hope 2024 Sharing Campaign, newspaper subscriptions for 26 senior citizen centers in the area, and support for the Eunha Strawberry Festival, residents' athletic events, and community meetings.
He also plans to cover all ingredient costs for a kimchi-making event organized by the Saemaeul Women's Association for elderly people living alone at the end of the year.
▲ A proud family of military service
Chairman Ga's family was selected as one of Korea's prestigious military service families under the Military Service Exemplary Family program operated by the Military Manpower Administration since 2004.
The program recognizes families in which three generations have honorably completed active military service and aims to ensure that families with a tradition of honorable military service are respected and take pride in their contribution to the nation.
In particular, his grandson, Ga Ji-hoon, was a U.S. citizen with dual nationality who voluntarily enlisted while attending university and completed his military service.
The family recognized under the program includes Ga Gap-son, his sons Ga Jeong-jun and Ga Sang-jun, and his grandson Ga Ji-hoon, representing three generations of the family.
Chairman Ga currently serves as chairman of the Institute for Two Loyalties and One Filial Piety Culture and as an honorary professor at Chungcheong University. He also contributes columns to CTN and Education Times and supports a Korean language institute in Cambodia.
He has previously served as a lecturer and adjunct professor at Sungkyunkwan University's College of Law and as a visiting professor at its Law School.
When reporters asked him about his guiding principle, his answer was simple:
“Honesty.”
Chairman Ga says that only honesty can create a sound nation and a healthy society. He believes that countries with honest citizens can prosper, while societies in which honesty is lacking cannot achieve lasting prosperity.
As chairman of the Institute for Two Loyalties and One Filial Piety Culture, he has continued to pursue major projects, including publication of The Comprehensive History of the Suzhou Jia Clan, which records the clan's history and present; publication of the historical record Seokhojip; academic seminars related to the publication of Seokhojip; and development of an electronic genealogy of the Suzhou Jia clan.
Chairman Ga has countless memorable sayings. Among those that reveal his philosophy of society, leadership, and citizenship are:
“Democratization is the result of the blood, sweat, and tears of the people.”
“I am proud of the Republic of Korea, a great nation among the world's top 10 economies.”
“A nation's identity must be firmly established.”
“The greatest crisis is not recognizing that a crisis exists.”
“Nations that feared war ultimately perished.”
“It's the economy, stupid!”
“Peace is not purchased with money; it is secured through national defense and strength.”
“Why doesn't Korea have a president like Churchill, Margaret Thatcher, or Nelson Mandela?”
“A leader must be the most patriotic person and must know how to embrace, compromise, and forgive.”

His long career in business, education, philanthropy, community service, and cultural preservation reflects a consistent philosophy: to live with integrity, remember those who helped him, and give back to society and future generations.
