충청남도 부여군 부여읍에 위치한 궁남지(사적 제135호)는 대한민국에서 가장 오래된 인공 정원이다.

백제 무왕 35년(634년)에 궁궐의 남쪽에 못을 파고 20여 리 밖에서 물을 끌어와 만들었다는 《삼국사기》의 기록이 전해진다.

못 가운데에는 섬을 만들고 버드나무를 심어, 신선이 산다는 전설 속의 '방장선산'을 재현해 낸 백제 조경 기술의 정수다.

이 아름다운 정원 양식은 훗날 일본의 정원 문화에도 큰 영향을 미친 것으로 알려져 있다.

궁남지는 백제의 서동(훗날 무왕)과 신라 선화공주의 국경을 초월한 사랑 이야기인 ‘서동설화’의 배경이기도 하다.

못 한가운데 자리 잡은 포룡정(抱龍亭)으로 이어지는 나무다리를 걷다 보면, 천년의 세월을 뛰어넘은 애틋한 로맨스의 여운이 고스란히 느껴진다.

가만히 귀를 기울이면 서동과 선화공주의 다정한 속삭임이 연잎을 스치는 바람 소리를 타고 들려오는 듯하다.

현재 궁남지는 홍련, 백련, 수련, 그리고 세계적으로도 희귀한 빅토리아연꽃 등 50여 종의 연꽃이 만개하여 거대한 연못 전체가 거대한 꽃밭으로 변모했다.

바람이 불 때마다 은은하게 퍼지는 연향은 궁남지를 찾는 이들의 마음을 맑게 씻어준다.

매년 7월이면 이곳에서 '부여서동연꽃축제'가 열려 다채로운 문화 공연과 야간 경관 조명으로 한여름 밤의 낭만을 더한다.

Gungnamji, a Grand Artificial Garden of Baekje
Located in Buyeo-eup, Buyeo-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, Gungnamji (Historic Site No. 135) is the oldest artificial garden in South Korea. According to the Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms), it was built in the 35th year of King Mu of Baekje (634 AD) by digging a pond to the south of the royal palace and channeling water from about 8 kilometers away. An island was created in the middle of the pond and planted with willows, reproducing the mythical 'Bangjangseonsan' where Taoist immortals were said to live. This beautiful gardening style is well known for having heavily influenced the traditional garden culture of Japan.
A Place Steeped in the Romance of Seodong and Princess Seonhwa
Gungnamji is also the backdrop for the 'Seodong Tale,' a love story that transcended national borders between Seodong of Baekje (later King Mu) and Princess Seonhwa of Silla. Walking across the wooden bridge leading to Poryongjeong Pavilion, which sits in the middle of the pond, one can truly feel the lingering emotions of a heartbreaking romance that spans over a thousand years. If you listen closely, the tender whispers of Seodong and Princess Seonhwa seem to ride on the sound of the wind brushing against the lotus leaves.
July, a Sea of Millions of Lotus Flowers
Currently, Gungnamji has transformed into a massive flower bed with around 50 species of lotuses in full bloom, including red lotuses, white lotuses, water lilies, and the rare Victoria water lily. The subtle scent of lotus spreading with every breeze purifies the minds of visitors. Every July, the 'Buyeo Seodong Lotus Festival' is held here, adding romance to midsummer nights with diverse cultural performances and nocturnal light displays.
