Lee Chung-won, Director of the National Science Museum, stated, "In an era of rapid artificial intelligence advancement, it is crucial not only to know facts, but also to judge what is correct, ask good questions, and build new ideas," adding, "We hope the AI New Gwageo serves as a novel arena where children enjoy science while building independent thinking skills."
The Gwacheon National Science Museum (Director Lee Chung-won) announced on October 13 that it will host the '2026 AI New Gwageo' for elementary school students nationwide from October 16 to November 14 to mark its 18th anniversary. The competition is a modern reinterpretation of traditional civil service examinations, designed to evaluate critical thinking, questioning ability, and creativity in the AI era.
The event consists of an online preliminary test ('Chosi') and an in-person final exam ('Bonsi'). The preliminary exam will select 230 top scorers through a mobile web-based science and AI quiz between October 16 and 29. Finalists will gather at the museum's central hall on November 14 to solve problem sets based on exhibit science principles while seated in traditional exam settings.
Prizes will be awarded to top performers designated as Jangwon (1st place), Bangan (2nd place), and Tamhwa (3rd place), with the top winner receiving traditional graduate attributes including a ceremonial royal edict and flower headwear.
