Kim Ju-eon, Chief of the General Situation Room at the Korea Coast Guard, stated, "Through this research, we will build a situation room that considers future work environments, reflecting not only basic operations but also the establishment of next-generation maritime situation management systems and welfare spaces for situational personnel."
The Korea Coast Guard announced that it has completed the 'Situation Room Space Standardization Research Project' to proactively respond to rapidly changing maritime situation management environments and reduce fatigue among 24-hour shift personnel. Previously, differences in scale, seating, equipment, and telecommunications across individual stations highlighted the need for standardized spatial criteria and upgraded working conditions.
In response, the Coast Guard analyzed the spatial structures and operational flows of leading international agencies such as the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) and the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) to establish a tailored standard model. The new standard incorporates an integrated information visualization environment and multi-screen setup to utilize real-time AI, big data, and satellite information. It also ensures spatial scalability for future equipment expansion while introducing adaptive lighting and dedicated recovery spaces to improve shift workers' focus and well-being.
The Korea Coast Guard plans to apply these design standards to new building construction and apply them step-by-step when renovating existing aged situation rooms nationwide.
