Park Jun-sung, Director of the Customs Inspection Division at the Korea Customs Service, stated, "People easily purchase counterfeit goods because they are cheap, but the cost could be our family's health and safety," adding, "We will further strengthen crackdowns on intellectual property-infringing goods to protect public safety, safeguard our companies' brand value, and establish fair market order."
The Korea Customs Service (Commissioner Lee Jong-wook) announced that it intercepted 280,733 counterfeit items at the customs clearance stage through a two-month intensive crackdown on intellectual property rights violations across 34 customs offices nationwide. This amount represents roughly 24% of the total volume seized in 2025, meaning an average of 4,700 counterfeit items were blocked at the border daily.
By category, toys and stationery accounted for the largest share at 93,862 items (33.4%), followed by fashion accessories and apparel. Notably, counterfeit goods infringing on Korean brands—including K-pop merchandise and K-beauty cosmetics—surged by over 102% compared to the previous inspection period in May and June, totaling 9,571 items. Express cargo and postal mail via cross-border e-commerce accounted for 46.2% of total seizures.
The Korea Customs Service warned that counterfeit items such as cosmetics, home appliances, and health supplements pose severe health risks, often containing carcinogenic substances like lead and cadmium or presenting fire hazards. The agency plans to continuously intensify border controls to protect public safety and fair commercial practices.
