KFTA Raises Concerns Over Historical Distortion Controversy Surrounding Film ‘Assassins’: “Creative Freedom Cannot Be a License to Distort Historical Facts”

Film Based on 1974 Shooting of First Lady Yuk Young-soo Raises Questions Over Fact and Fiction
“Historical Facts and Cinematic Imagination Must Be Clearly Distinguished for Student Audiences”
[CTN/Education] Reporter Ga Geum-hyeon
The Korean Federation of Teachers’ Associations (KFTA), headed by President Kang Joo-ho, has expressed serious concerns over the controversy surrounding the historical depiction in the film ‘Assassins.’
In a statement released on the 6th, the KFTA said it was “seriously concerned that blurring the boundaries between confirmed facts, unverified allegations and cinematic imagination while dealing with actual historical events and real figures could lead young people to develop a distorted understanding of history.”
The organization stressed that “creative and expressive freedom must be respected, but the educational impact on students cannot simply be dismissed by saying that ‘a movie is just a movie.’”
‘Assassins,’ rated for viewers aged 12 and above, deals with the 1974 shooting of First Lady Yuk Young-soo. According to the KFTA, the film raises the possibility that the Korean Central Intelligence Agency may have been involved in the incident and suggests that former President Park Chung-hee may have ordered the assassination of his wife in an attempt to overcome political pressure at the time.
The KFTA argued that such cinematic hypotheses should be clearly distinguished from historically established facts, citing statements and records involving individuals who participated in the investigation at the time.
The organization noted that former prosecutor Kim Ki-choon, who participated in the investigation, reiterated in 2005 that the incident was committed by Moon Se-kwang, who had been recruited by the pro-North Korean organization Chongryon. Former prosecutor Kim Young-soo, who also participated in the investigation, recently stated in an interview that Moon Se-kwang’s sole responsibility for the crime was certain.
The KFTA also referred to a 2002 statement by North Korean leader Kim Jong-il concerning the attempted assassination of President Park Chung-hee, as well as Moon Se-kwang’s final statement during his appeal trial in which he expressed remorse for his crime.
The organization criticized the film’s introductory notice indicating that it was “based on a true story but that specific events were partially dramatized,” arguing that such wording could make it difficult for viewers to distinguish historical fact from fictional reconstruction.
The KFTA emphasized that particular caution is necessary because students who are still developing their historical knowledge and critical thinking skills may accept fictional settings or hypotheses presented in films as actual historical facts.
The organization said, “The more a work emphasizes that it is based on actual events and records, the greater the responsibility to ensure that audiences can distinguish between confirmed facts and creative elements.”
It also called on the filmmakers to take responsible measures, including providing sufficient explanations and guidance to minimize confusion.
The KFTA further highlighted the importance of media literacy education.
According to the organization, an OECD report published in 2021, ‘21st-Century Readers: Developing Literacy Skills in a Digital World,’ found that the correct response rate among Korean 15-year-old students for questions requiring them to distinguish fact from opinion was 25.6%, compared with an OECD average of 47.4%.
The KFTA argued that this demonstrates the need for stronger critical media literacy education.
“Given the tendency in Korea for people to accept media content as factual without sufficient verification, greater caution is required when students watch films dealing with historical events,” the organization said.
It added that filmmakers should not simply respond to controversy by saying that the work was reconstructed using cinematic imagination, but should clearly indicate fictional elements at the beginning of the film and strengthen media literacy education so that students can independently assess the credibility of information.
The KFTA also called for greater educational preparation when schools organize group movie screenings.
It said, “A group movie screening organized by a school or teacher is an educational activity and therefore should not be judged solely on the basis of student preferences or the film’s age rating.”
The organization recommended pre-screening reviews, explanations distinguishing historical fact from fiction, and post-viewing discussions as part of the educational process.
It also urged the Ministry of Education and local education offices to provide teaching materials and educational standards based on historical records regarding politically controversial issues and to protect teachers from undue complaints and political pressure.
Kang Joo-ho, president of the KFTA, said, “If we emphasized proper historical awareness and responsibility regarding the remarks and behavior of students at Baehwae High School, historical representations in popular culture encountered by students should also be examined according to the same principles.”
He continued, “If we condemn distortion and trivialization of one part of history while remaining silent about distortion of another, the principles and credibility of history education will inevitably collapse, and our children will ultimately bear the consequences.”
Kang emphasized, “What children need is not a version of history that changes according to political camps, but history education that teaches facts as facts and enables students to make sound judgments for themselves.”
He called on the Ministry of Education and local education authorities to carefully assess the educational impact of the film and stressed that standards concerning historical awareness and responsibility should not differ depending on the subject or target involved.
The KFTA had previously emphasized, during controversy over inappropriate remarks by the Baehwae High School baseball team in June, that historical pain should not be trivialized and that students should be educated to develop an accurate understanding of important events in modern Korean history.
The organization says the latest controversy underscores the need to strengthen history education and media literacy so that students can distinguish historical facts from fictional elements when encountering cultural content based on real historical events.
