경북 경주시는 동해남부선 폐선 이후 남아 있던 동천지하차도를 철거하고 도로 평면화 공사를 마무리해 조기 개통했다고 9월 30일 발표했다. 이번에 새로 조성된 도로는 길이 130m, 폭 12m 규모의 왕복 2차로 도로다.
그동안 동천지하차도는 도로 폭이 좁고 경사가 급한 데다 통과 높이가 낮아 차량 및 보행자 통행에 큰 불편을 겪어왔다. 특히 집중호우 시 상습 침수 우려가 커 안전 문제가 지속 제기됐으며, 지하 구조물이 주거지와 상권을 단절시키는 원인으로 지적받아 왔다.
