The National Institute of Biological Resources under the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment announced that genetic analysis of otter feces collected between January and April identified 27 endangered otters inhabiting the Han River.
This figure represents an 80% increase compared to the 15 otters identified in a 2022 study conducted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
Researchers analyzed 106 fecal samples across 27 sites, identifying 21 otters along the main stream and 6 along tributaries, comprising 16 females and 11 males.
The genetic analysis also revealed that all 27 otters were genetically related, confirming the presence of five distinct family units residing primarily in eastern Han River areas such as Seongnaecheon.
While otter habitats were severely damaged by concrete development projects in the 1960s and 70s, restoration projects since the 2000s have allowed the species to expand its range to northern and southern tributaries.
