Nak-young Joo, Mayor of Gyeongju City, stated, "This award recognizes the changes and achievements built together with our citizens." Mayor Joo added, "In the 9th elected municipal administration, we will continue Gyeongju's new leap forward." Gyeongju City announced that it won the Grand Prize in the Local Government sector at the 2nd Korea Local Autonomy Awards on August 27.
The Korea Local Autonomy Awards, established last year by the Korean Association for Local Government Studies, evaluates administrative innovation, regional development, and community coexistence to select outstanding individuals and organizations.
Gyeongju received high marks for hosting the 2025 APEC Summit as a basic local government and expanding those outcomes into post-APEC projects across cultural, economic, and peace sectors. The assessment also reflected achievements such as reaching a 2 trillion won public budget, attracting 6.8 trillion won in private investment, and fostering nuclear power and future automotive industries.
Additionally, the adoption of participatory administrative measures, such as citizen roundtables and participatory budgeting, contributed to the evaluation. Gyeongju previously received an SA rating in pledge fulfillment for six consecutive years and secured 80 external awards in 2025.
Vice Mayor Hyuk-june Choi attended the ceremony to receive the award on behalf of the city, and footage of the event is scheduled to be released on TV and the association's official YouTube channel.
