Won-ho Choi, Chairperson of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC), stated after inspecting the site, "In a situation where heatwaves are becoming routine, please ensure the health and safety management of field workers as well as the integrity of nuclear power plant facilities. In preparation for rising seawater temperatures, monitor temperatures in real time and respond quickly to secure plant safety." The NSSC announced that Chairperson Choi visited the Hanul Nuclear Power Plant in Uljin, Gyeongsangbuk-do on August 6 to review safety management operations against the extreme heat.

According to the NSSC, following a preliminary video conference with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) on August 5, Chairperson Choi personally visited the facility to check on-site responses.

With seawater temperatures used for cooling nuclear reactors rising since late July, the inspection focused on heat exchanger performance, temperature sensor integrity, and KHNP's emergency response systems. The commission added that Choi also inspected the Shin-Hanul Units 3 and 4 construction site to review worker safety measures, including work restrictions during peak heat, rest facilities, and cooling supplies.

While inspecting nuclear cooling systems and worker health standards during record-breaking heatwaves offers a plausible narrative for site safety management, skepticism remains.

Critics argue that making routine verbal requests during site visits when rising ocean temperatures directly threaten reactor shutdowns borders on reactive showmanship. To deliver real results beyond symbolic supervisory visits, the NSSC must establish concrete policy alternatives, such as deploying active water temperature mitigation technology and upgrading automated power output adjustment systems to handle marine thermal anomalies.
