[경주/CTN]이수현 기자= 주낙영 경주시장이 9월 증편을 앞두고 "이번 KTX와 KTX-이음 증편은 시민들의 교통 편의를 높이는 것은 물론 경주를 찾는 관광객들의 접근성을 더욱 향상시키는 계기가 될 것이다"라며 "앞으로도 시민과 관광객이 더욱 편리하게 철도를 이용할 수 있도록 이동 편의와 접근성 개선에 최선을 다하겠다"라고 밝혔다. 경상북도 경주는 고속철도 통합 운행 조정에 따라 경주역을 경유하는 KTX와 KTX-이음 운행이 편도 기준 주중 매일 3회, 주말 매일 5회 증편된다고 발표했다.

경주시에 따르면 이번 운행 조정은 오는 9월 1일부터 시행된다. 현재 경주역 KTX는 주중 94회, 주말 111회 운행되고 있다.

이번 조정으로 경부선 서울~부산 KTX는 주중 매일 하행 1회, 주말 매일 상행 2회와 하행 1회 등 총 3회가 추가 운행된다. 중앙선 서울~부전 KTX-이음은 매일 상행 1회와 하행 1회 등 총 2회 증편된다. 시는 지난해 기준 서울~경주 KTX 하루 평균 이용객이 1만 497명에 달하며 최근 3년간 꾸준히 증가했다고 설명했다. 아울러 이번 증편으로 수도권을 오가는 시민 편의와 관광객 유치에 긍정적 효과가 있을 것이라고 덧붙였다.

이처럼 철도 운행 조정을 통해 고속열차 정차 횟수를 늘리고 수도권 및 주요 도시와의 접근성을 개선하는 것은 지역 주민의 이동권을 보장하고 관광 활성화를 도모하는 조치로 평가된다.

다만 한국철도공사(코레일)의 전국 단위 열차 운행 조정에 맞춰 몇 편 추가 정차하는 것에 불과한 사안을 두고 마치 경주시가 주도해 교통망을 혁신한 것처럼 홍보하는 것은 사후약방문식 생색내기 행정이라는 비판을 피하기 어렵다. 열차 몇 편 증편을 치적으로 포장하는 전시성 홍보에 치중할 것이 아니라, 경주역 도착 후 도심 및 주요 관광지로 이어지는 시내버스 노선 개편과 24시간 택시 승강장 체계화 등 실질적인 연계 교통 인프라 구축이라는 대안이 마련되어야 할 것으로 보인다.

The city explained that daily average KTX passengers between Seoul and Gyeongju reached 10,497 last year, showing a steady upward trend over the past three years.

While securing additional train stops through national rail schedule adjustments offers a plausible narrative for improving regional accessibility and tourism, skepticism remains.

Critics argue that presenting Korail's routine nationwide timetable update as if it were a major municipal breakthrough borders on reactive showmanship. To deliver real results beyond boasting about minor train schedule additions, Gyeongju City must establish concrete policy alternatives, such as restructuring local bus routes connecting Gyeongju Station to the city center and expanding last-mile transportation infrastructure for arriving tourists.
