[CTN Column] Thinking of Father Lee Tae-seok
By Gap Son Ga, Emeritus Professor at Chungcheong University
Lee Tae-seok, who touched many hearts, lived a life filled with prayer, tears, and dedication in the remote regions of South Sudan. He passed away from colon cancer on January 14, 2010, at the age of 49.
He graduated from Inje University College of Medicine as a doctor and later completed theological studies at the age of 40, receiving ordination as a Catholic priest.
He then went to Tonj, a remote village in South Sudan — a country devastated by long civil wars, poverty, cholera, malaria, and Hansen¡¯s disease, and widely regarded as one of the most dangerous and hopeless places in the world. There, he established a hospital and a school and even organized a brass band, planting dreams and hope in the hearts of local residents.
In February following his death, footage was broadcast showing the Tonj Brass Band marching through the village. KBS also produced and screened a film depicting his life story.
The Sudan Children¡¯s Scholarship Association, which he founded, now has around 3,000 supporters.
One cannot help but wonder why God, said to be almighty, called such a devoted ¡°angel priest¡± so suddenly when there was still so much work left for him to do.
The sacrifice and service shown by Father Lee Tae-seok — both priest and physician — in a small village of a remote nation offer profound lessons not only to us but also to people around the world.
At a time when some priests in Korea neglect pastoral duties, prayer, sacrifice, and service while turning into ideological or political activists, one wonders how they would evaluate Father Lee Tae-seok today.
It may be worth reflecting on the stern warning of Mahatma Gandhi, one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century, who said that religion without sacrifice can destroy a nation.
