We will strengthen industry-academia-research cooperation." The National Institute of Forest Science (Director Yong-kwan Kim) under the Korea Forest Service announced on August 12 that it held a 'Colloquium on Digital Transformation of Mushroom Breeding and Cultivation Technology.'

According to the agency, the colloquium was organized to explore ways to integrate AI and big data technologies into mushroom breeding and cultivation.

Presentations covered molecular breeding, smart farm intelligent environmental control, and AI-based quality prediction trends. The agency added that expert panel discussions followed to debate field application strategies and future research directions.

While convening researchers and experts to share digital breeding outcomes and smart cultivation technologies offers a plausible narrative for boosting future forestry competitiveness, skepticism remains.

Critics point out that holding a one-off academic colloquium focused on theoretical presentations while framing it as leading the digital AI transformation of mushroom farms borders on administrative showmanship and excessive self-praise. Rather than relying on simple research sharing or rhetorical promises of cooperation, the agency needs practical measures, such as subsidies for mushroom smart farm equipment and commercializing new high-tech spawn strains for local growers.
