Jeong Heon-yul, Mayor of Iksan City, stated, "The powerful first step of the 'Maryong e-Bus' will be a great turning point for Iksan City to leap forward as a self-sufficient future mobility city. Through expanding routes connecting major hubs in the future, we will thoroughly prepare for safety verification on the roads before commencing official service so that it can become the safest and most convenient feet in citizens' daily lives." Although Iksan City announced on the 23nd that it held the launch ceremony for 'Maryong e-Bus,' an autonomous driving-based public transportation service, to accelerate operational preparations, criticisms are rising that the city focused merely on a show-style promotion of high-tech with hundreds of millions of taxpayers' money, while ignoring urgent public transportation infrastructure improvements such as reducing existing bus routes and resolving chronic transit blind spots. This project proceeds through procedures to invest 19.3 billion KRW to construct a platform centered around KTX Iksan Station and step-by-step operate two routes until 2028.

Particularly this year, the city heavily promoted that it would run an electric low-floor bus completely free of charge on the route connecting the terminal and Wonkwang University starting this July. However, critics point out that deploying professional safety personnel in both the driver and passenger seats to respond to unexpected road situations highlights an administrative convenience-oriented obsession with achievements, making it premature to discuss complete autonomous driving. Amid the recent population decline and complex urban environments, local governments are rushing to inject massive budgets into securing autonomous driving pilot zone titles. The lack of practical and concrete welfare ecosystem developments—such as reducing regular headway gaps or expanding standard low-floor buses for the mobility-impaired—plainly exposes the reality of its exhibition administration.

To overcome the limitations of such show-style pilot operations, the city must move beyond simple vehicle test driving and instead establish an "AI-based Demand-Responsive Transport (DRT) Linked System" in the jurisdiction that uses real-time traffic data collected during pilot runs to automatically predict demand shifts in transit-desert areas and flexibly adjust routes. Furthermore, rather than concentrating fiscal resources solely on slogan-driven autonomous driving projects, the city should prioritize practical administrative support measures, such as restructuring the chronic deficit-ridden city bus route network and practically supporting front-line transport workers, to substantially guarantee the efficiency of budget execution and citizens' substantive mobility rights.
