경상남도 여수시는 9월 10일 시장실에서 유엔관광기구(UN Tourism) 방문단과 면담을 가졌다고 밝혔다.

이번 면담은 '2026년도 남해안권 해양관광·MICE 도시포럼' 참석차 여수를 방문한 방문단을 계기로 성사됐다.

면담에서는 유엔관광기구 산하 지속가능관광관측소 국제네트워크(INSTO) 가입 절차 및 모니터링 방안이 집중 논의됐다.

여수시가 가입을 최종 확정할 경우 국내 지자체 중 최초 정회원 사례가 될 전망이다.

시는 관측소 운영으로 축적된 데이터 및 우수 사례를 정책 수립에 반영하고 회원 도시 간 네트워킹을 확대할 계획이라며 유엔관광기구 아·태 임원 연수 유치 및 2026여수세계섬박람회 연계 국제회의 공동 개최 등 글로벌 협력 과제도 제안했다.

여수시는 앞으로 로컬 워킹그룹 구성 등 관련 절차를 차질 없이 진행해 국제적 위상을 높여갈 방침이라고 밝혔다.

Discussions focused on INSTO membership requirements, which monitors economic, environmental, and social impacts of local tourism.

If finalized, Yeosu will mark the first South Korean local government to join as a full member.

Yeosu City also proposed hosting the UN Tourism Asia-Pacific Executive Training Program and joint international conferences tied to the 2026 Yeosu World Island Exhibition.
