'여러분이 살아온 이야기가 보배입니다'라는 주제로 열린 이날 강연은 나라와 지역사회를 위해 헌신해 온 보훈 회원들의 삶을 돌아보고, 인생의 가치와 참된 행복의 의미를 함께 되새기기 위해 마련됐다.

조 전 시장은 안중근 의사 장례 당시 중국 총통 원세계가 보낸 만장 글귀인 "몸은 한국에 있어도 이름은 만방에 떨쳤다. 백년을 사는 일 없는데 그대는 죽어서 천년을 산다"를 인용하며 강연의 포문을 열었다.

그는 "삶의 가치는 얼마나 오래 살았느냐보다 어떻게 살았으며 무엇을 남겼느냐에 달려 있다"고 강조했다.

이어 음즐(陰騭)의 의미와 사랑, 행복을 이야기하며 "진정한 행복은 물질이나 명예가 아니라 사랑을 베풀고 선한 영향을 남기는 삶에 있다"고 덧붙였다.

특히 조 전 시장은 이날 강연에서 ‘전몰군경미망인회’의 명칭 변경 필요성을 제기해 큰 눈길을 끌었다.

그는 "미망인(未亡人)이라는 표현은 아직 죽지 못한 사람이라는 다소 낡고 수동적인 의미로 받아들여질 수 있다"며 "나라를 위해 희생한 전몰군경의 배우자로서 당당하게 살아온 분들의 자긍심과 명예를 존중하기 위해 ‘전몰군경부인회’라는 명칭으로 변경을 검토할 필요가 있다"고 제안했다.

아울러 "어르신들이 살아오신 이야기는 개인의 삶을 넘어 우리 시대의 역사이자 후대에 물려줄 소중한 보배"라며 경험과 지혜를 자녀와 후손들에게 들려주고 기록으로 남길 것을 당부했다.

조 전 시장은 "성공이란 죽을 때 행복하게 죽는 것"이라며 "사랑하고 베풀고 감사하며 살아온 삶이라면 마지막 순간에 ‘' 잘 살았다'고 말할 수 있을 것"이라고 강조하며 강연을 마무리했다.

이날 강연에 참석한 조문호 서산복지문화대학장(서산상이군경회장)과 이은수 서산전몰군경미망인회 회장 등 보훈단체 관계자들은 "지나온 세월의 의미와 가치를 되새기고 스스로에 대한 자긍심을 갖게 된 뜻깊은 시간이었다"고 소감을 밝혔다.

"Considering the pride and honor of those who have lived dignified lives as spouses of fallen heroes who sacrificed for the country, renaming it the 'War Dead Wives Association' would convey greater respect."
He also urged the audience, "The stories of your lives transcend individual experiences—they are the history of our era and a precious treasure to pass down. It is vital to share your wisdom and experiences with your children and descendants and leave them recorded."
At the end of his lecture, Cho emphasized, "Success is dying happily. If you have lived a life of loving, sharing, and being grateful, you will be able to say 'I lived a good life' at your final moment."
Attending leaders, including Cho Moon-ho, Dean of Seosan Welfare & Culture College (President of the Seosan Disabled Veterans Association), and Lee Eun-soo, President of the Seosan War Dead Widows Association, expressed that it was "a meaningful time to reflect on the value and significance of the years passed and take pride in their lives."
