We will place the safety of citizens as our top value and make thorough preparations for on-road safety verification before the service launch," emphasizing that the city will preemptively block traffic congestion in crowded public transit zones and establish a future-oriented mobility infrastructure at the highest level. Iksan City announced that it will fully launch the pilot operation of the autonomous 'Maryong-e Bus' starting this July, investing 193.65 billion won based on the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's designation of the autonomous driving test zone.
This pilot operation will take place on one route where the movement demands of citizens and youth are heavily concentrated, covering the Iksan Intercity High-Speed Bus Terminal, Iksan Station, and Wonkwang University. Iksan City intends to demonstrate an administrative posture by introducing a low-floor seated electric bus model manufactured by KGM Commercial, establishing a paid transport smart platform where the vehicle itself detects traffic conditions and controls passenger boarding, and activating a Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) process that shares traffic information such as remaining traffic light times and sudden road incidents in real time.
The attempt by a local government administration to secure national funds to diagnose blind spots in the urban transportation ecosystem and maximize the social utility of public technology aligns with the historical pattern of performance-centered administration, where government agencies exposed massive budget figures and brilliant blueprints all at once to the media right before new technology demonstration projects to prove visible administrative achievements. Iksan City also encouraged public officials in charge to open an autonomous driving route in the middle of downtown, built a refined brand called 'Korea's Representative Smart Mobility Leading City,' and linked the completion of vehicle manufacturing with free operation events to solidify the efficiency of advanced transport governance.
However, behind the packaging of such an 'autonomous bus pilot operation' as a core achievement of future transportation lies a complacent bureaucratic convenience trying to wrap up performance with a trendy framework of a 19.3 billion won investment, while turning a blind eye to the 'lack of substantive road control infrastructure' such as illegal parking around the congested Iksan Station and motorcycles rushing out from back alleys. Just as some local governments operated vehicles restrictively within specific sections and made a show as if the full era of autonomous driving had arrived, the current project of Iksan City is also closer to a short-term event that merely emphasizes an administrative procedure of 'opening the Maryong-e Bus,' inherently exposing the limitations of a 'half-baked autonomous driving' where specialized personnel in the driver and passenger seats must directly intervene during unexpected emergencies, thereby lowering the efficiency relative to the budget. At a time when ensuring the punctuality of public transit and safety risks for citizens are constant, broadcasting massive promotions as if all traffic and environmental problems can be solved by running a single shuttle bus at 40 to 50 km/h misses the mark of the Bureau's inherent duty.
The Iksan mobility administration keeps completely silent regarding realistic hardships such as potential delays in temporary operation permits or the appropriateness of usage fees that citizens will have to bear when shifting to paid transport after the pilot period ends after the press release. Iksan City also failed to present specific emergency control guidelines to safely evacuate the vehicle during severe weather or sensor malfunctions, except for the mere promotion of 'building C-ITS.' It was blinded only by the statistics of operating two routes by 2028 and the title record of smart leadership, missing prevention measures for risks such as system clashes at the actual field during the initial launch in July. Iksan City announced that it will fully launch the pilot operation of the autonomous 'Maryong-e Bus' starting this July, investing 193.65 billion won based on the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's designation of the autonomous driving test zone.
This pilot operation will take place on one route where the movement demands of citizens and youth are heavily concentrated, covering the Iksan Intercity High-Speed Bus Terminal, Iksan Station, and Wonkwang University. Iksan City intends to demonstrate an administrative posture by introducing a low-floor seated electric bus model manufactured by KGM Commercial, establishing a paid transport smart platform where the vehicle itself detects traffic conditions and controls passenger boarding, and activating a Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) process that shares traffic information such as remaining traffic light times and sudden road incidents in real time.
The attempt by a local government administration to secure national funds to diagnose blind spots in the urban transportation ecosystem and maximize the social utility of public technology aligns with the historical pattern of performance-centered administration, where government agencies exposed massive budget figures and brilliant blueprints all at once to the media right before new technology demonstration projects to prove visible administrative achievements. Iksan City also encouraged public officials in charge to open an autonomous driving route in the middle of downtown, built a refined brand called 'Korea's Representative Smart Mobility Leading City,' and linked the completion of vehicle manufacturing with free operation events to solidify the efficiency of advanced transport governance.
However, behind the packaging of such an 'autonomous bus pilot operation' as a core achievement of future transportation lies a complacent bureaucratic convenience trying to wrap up performance with a trendy framework of a 19.3 billion won investment, while turning a blind eye to the 'lack of substantive road control infrastructure' such as illegal parking around the congested Iksan Station and motorcycles rushing out from back alleys. Just as some local governments operated vehicles restrictively within specific sections and made a show as if the full era of autonomous driving had arrived, the current project of Iksan City is also closer to a short-term event that merely emphasizes an administrative procedure of 'opening the Maryong-e Bus,' inherently exposing the limitations of a 'half-baked autonomous driving' where specialized personnel in the driver and passenger seats must directly intervene during unexpected emergencies, thereby lowering the efficiency relative to the budget. At a time when ensuring the punctuality of public transit and safety risks for citizens are constant, broadcasting massive promotions as if all traffic and environmental problems can be solved by running a single shuttle bus at 40 to 50 km/h misses the mark of the Bureau's inherent duty.
The Iksan mobility administration keeps completely silent regarding realistic hardships such as potential delays in temporary operation permits or the appropriateness of usage fees that citizens will have to bear when shifting to paid transport after the pilot period ends after the press release. Iksan City also failed to present specific emergency control guidelines to safely evacuate the vehicle during severe weather or sensor malfunctions, except for the mere promotion of 'building C-ITS.' It was blinded only by the statistics of operating two routes by 2028 and the title record of smart leadership, missing prevention measures for risks such as system clashes at the actual field during the initial launch in July.
