[기상청/CTN]가요진 기자= 이미선 기상청장은 "기후위기 시대에는 한 국가의 기상기술 발전을 넘어 세계가 함께 위험기상 대응 역량을 높이는 것이 중요하다"라며 "앞으로도 한국의 선진 수치예보 모델 개발 및 활용 기술과 경험을 국제사회와 적극 공유하여 세계적인 기후위기 대응에 기여하겠다"라고 말했다.

기상청은 아프리카 5개국의 기상예보 및 수치모델 업무 담당자 15명을 대상으로 '기후위기 대응을 위한 수치예보모델 활용 역량 강화' 1차 연도 초청 연수를 운영한다고 밝혔다.

이번 연수는 9월 7일부터 18일까지 2주간 한국국제협력단 연수센터에서 진행되며 케냐, 라이베리아, 르완다, 튀니지, 우간다 기상청 관계자들이 참가한다.

이번 사업은 세계기상기구와 UN이 추진하는 '모두를 위한 조기경보' 체계 구축을 지원하고 개발도상국의 수치예보모델 활용 역량을 끌어올리기 위해 마련됐다.

교육 과정은 한국형 전지구 수치예보모델(KIM)의 기본 개념, 관측자료 활용 및 자료동화, 인공지능(AI) 모델 활용, 현업 예보 성능 검증 등 총 47시간으로 구성된다.

참가자들은 국가기상슈퍼컴퓨터센터와 국가기상위성센터를 견학하고 각국 현정에 맞는 실행 계획(Action Plan)을 수립·발표하게 된다.

기상청은 오는 2028년까지 3년에 걸쳐 이번 역량 강화 과정을 단계적으로 운영해 개도국의 위험기상 대응력을 지속 지원할 계획이라고 밝혔다.

Administrator Lee added, "We will actively share Korea's advanced numerical weather prediction tech and experiences with the international community."

The Korea Meteorological Administration announced on September 8 that it launched a 2-week invitational training program for 15 meteorological officials from five African nations.

Running from September 7 to 18 at the KOICA Training Center, the program invites weather forecasters from Kenya, Liberia, Rwanda, Tunisia, and Uganda.

Aligned with the WMO's 'Early Warnings for All' initiative, the training focuses on transferring Korea's proprietary Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) model technologies.

The 47-hour curriculum covers the Korean Integrated Model (KIM), data assimilation, AI model applications, and practical regional model development.

Participants will also inspect the National Meteorological Supercomputer Center and draft country-specific action plans for implementation.
