수년 동안 자금이 생길 때마다 붕어 치어와 민물장어를 조금씩 구입해 정성껏 키워온 청년어업인들에게 이번 집단폐사는 단순한 물고기의 폐사가 아니라, 어렵게 품어온 꿈과 삶의 터전이 한순간에 무너진 사건이다.

특히 계속되는 폭염 속에서 양어장 수면 위로 장어와 붕어 등이 잇따라 떠오르면서 피해 규모가 눈덩이처럼 커졌다.

현장에서는 이 같은 사정을 감안해 행정기관이 서류만으로 피해 여부를 판단할 것이 아니라 실제 현장을 직접 확인하고, 피해 상황과 사육 과정 등을 종합적으로 살펴야 한다는 목소리가 커지고 있다.

한 어업 종사자는 "행정기관이 서류만 뒤적일 것이 아니라 지금 현장에서 무슨 일이 벌어지고 있는지 직접 봐야 한다"며 "청년들이 다시 일어설 수 있도록 현실적인 지원대책을 마련해야 한다"고 주장했다.

오랜 시간 동안 조금씩 마련한 자금을 다시 물고기에 투자하고, 먹이를 주고, 수질을 관리하며 하루하루 키워온 생명들이 눈앞에서 속절없이 사라지는 모습을 지켜봐야 했기 때문이다.
