Braving the Sweltering Heat: 3rd Korea Lighthouse Week Draws 5,000 Visitors to Busan A two-week ocean culture festival concludes with overwhelming success, highlighting coastal tours, photo classes, and educational programs.
The 3rd Korea Lighthouse Week, the nation's largest lighthouse ocean culture festival, has successfully concluded its two-week run in Busan.
Held from July 1 to 14 at the Yeongdo Lighthouse and across Busan to commemorate "World Lighthouse Day," the event captivated over 5,000 visitors, including summer vacationers, students, and families, despite heat index temperatures exceeding 38¡ÆC (100.4¡ÆF).
The main venue, Yeongdo Lighthouse, attracted over 3,000 visitors alone. Popular activities included a "Smartphone Photography Class" tailored for Gen Z participants looking to capture unforgettable memories, and a captivating "Bubble Show" that delighted children and parents alike. Additionally, travelers participating in the national "Beautiful Lighthouse Stamp Tour" visited Yeongdo Lighthouse—a key stop on the itinerary—and had the chance to take part in the festival¡¯s festive activities.
Pre-reservation programs experienced overwhelming demand. Over 1,000 applicants competed for spots in the "Yacht Tour" and "Bus Tour." Through a random draw, 150 lucky participants (50 for the bus tour and 100 for the yacht tour) were selected to enjoy romantic and scenic tours along Busan's coastline.
Furthermore, the festival featured "Visiting Lighthouse School," the nation's first outreach education initiative tailored for children. More than 400 students across 20 educational institutions nationwide participated in hands-on sessions learning about maritime safety, the navigational importance of lighthouses, and fascinating lighthouse stories from around the world.
Co-organized by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Korea Institute of Aids to Navigation (K-AtoN), Korea Lighthouse Week aims to promote the charm of lighthouse culture and raise public awareness of maritime safety. In its third year, the event has firmly established itself as an interactive, community-centered marine cultural festival.
"We sincerely thank everyone who came out to enjoy the festival despite the sweltering heat," said Shim Ji-won, head of the Lighthouse Ocean Culture Team at K-AtoN. "Moving forward, we will continue to develop diverse programs so that lighthouses can evolve beyond their traditional role as navigational aids into welcoming cultural spaces that offer joy and comfort to the public."
