[문화예술/CTN]가금현 기자= 부산문화회관(대표이사 차재근) 부산시립극단이 오는 7월 2일(목)부터 4일(토)까지 부산문화회관 중극장에서 제82회 정기공연 연극 <타오>를 무대에 올린다.
이번 공연은 2024년 제40회 한국추리문학상 대상을 수상하며 큰 화제를 모은 김세화의 동명 장편소설을 원작으로 한다. 허석민이 각색과 연출을 맡아 소설 속 치밀한 서사를 무대 위 생생한 감각으로 구현해냈다.
연극 <타오>는 단순한 범죄 추적극의 틀을 넘어, 동시대 한국 사회의 구조적 폭력과 무관심을 정면으로 다루는 '사회파 드라마'다. 작품은 폭우가 쏟아지는 밤 이슬람 사원 인근에서 발생한 인권변호사 피습 사건으로 시작된다.
경찰은 이를 단순 폭행으로 종결 지으려 하지만, 형사과장 오지영이 사건 이면의 미묘한 단서들을 포착하며 수사는 새로운 국면을 맞이한다.
이후 또 다른 시체가 발견되면서 사건은 베트남 유학생 '타오(Tao)'의 실종 사건과 얽히기 시작한다.
학비와 생계를 위해 치열하게 살아가던 평범한 유학생 타오. 그녀가 사라진 후 우리 사회가 보여준 침묵과 외면은 누군가의 존재가 얼마나 쉽게 지워질 수 있는지를 묵직하게 경고한다.
연출진은 이번 작품에 대해 "특정한 악인을 찾아내는 이야기라기보다, 누군가를 사라지게 만든 사회 전체의 풍경을 바라보는 작품"이라며, "혐오와 침묵, 외면이 반복되는 현실 속에서 타인의 고통에 대한 우리의 책임을 묻고자 했다"고 전했다.
차가운 도시의 풍경과 폭우, 음습한 골목 등을 상징적으로 구현한 무대는 타오가 사회의 '보이지 않는 그림자'로 전락해가는 과정을 시각적으로 극대화한다.
부산시립극단은 속도감 있는 추리극의 몰입감 속에 사회적 성찰이라는 묵직한 메시지를 담아 관객들에게 깊은 울림을 선사할 예정이다.

[CTN = Reporter Geum-hyeon Ga] The Busan Metropolitan Theatre Company of the Busan Cultural Center (CEO Jae-geun Cha) will present its 82nd regular performance, the play Tao, at the Medium Theatre of the Busan Cultural Center from Thursday, July 2 to Saturday, July 4.
The production is based on the full-length novel of the same name by Se-hwa Kim, a highly acclaimed work that won the Grand Prize at the 40th Korea Mystery Literature Awards in 2024. The novel has been adapted and directed for the stage by Seok-min Heo.
Going beyond a simple crime-tracking thriller, Tao is a social drama that directly confronts the structural violence and indifference of contemporary Korean society. The story begins on a night of torrential rain when a human rights lawyer, who had been supporting multicultural immigrants, is found bleeding near a mosque. While the police attempt to dismiss it as a simple assault, Chief of Detectives Ji-young Oh discovers subtle clues behind the case and pushes the investigation forward. As another body is discovered, the case intertwines with the disappearance of a Vietnamese international student named 'Tao.'
Tao was an ordinary student working multiple jobs to pay for her tuition and living expenses. However, following her disappearance, no one actively searches for her, and as time passes, she is quietly erased from society. Through this process, the play poses a heavy question about how easily someone's pain and existence can be ignored and deleted.
The director focused on "the process of restoring a person's traces" rather than the resolution of the crime itself. "Rather than a story about finding a specific villain, Tao is a piece that looks at the landscape of an entire society that causes someone to disappear," the production team stated. "In a reality where hatred, silence, and turning a blind eye are repeated, we wanted to ask how responsible we truly are in the face of others' suffering."
The stage symbolically portrays the cold urban landscape, torrential rain, alleys, and interrogation rooms, visually representing the process of Tao gradually turning into an 'invisible shadow' of society. Through this production, the Busan Metropolitan Theatre Company plans to shed light on the structural violence of contemporary Korean society while demonstrating that theatre can serve as a space for social empathy and reflection.
