Byung-gi Joo, Chairperson of the Fair Trade Commission, analyzed the recent structural shifts, stating, "There were active movements to exclude non-core businesses for portfolio restructuring, alongside active inclusions into high-value future industries like AI and semiconductors." The Fair Trade Commission (Chairperson Byung-gi Joo) disclosed the quarterly changes in affiliates among large corporate groups with assets over 5 trillion KRW.

According to the commission, the total number of affiliates across 102 large business groups slightly decreased by 4, down to 3,534 companies.

During this period, 75 companies were newly added while 79 were excluded. Major trends included SK and CJ shedding non-core entities, while Samsung and GS acquired AI data center and semiconductor-related firms.

While tracking quarterly corporate entity changes and informing the public on market transparency offers a plausible narrative for regulatory oversight, skepticism remains.

Critics point out that publishing routine 3-month statistical headcounts while framing market-driven corporate reshuffling as major administrative achievements borders on showmanship and excessive self-praise. Rather than relying on simple statistical press releases or descriptive trend analysis, the antitrust agency needs practical results, such as cracking down on unfair internal trading during affiliate expansion and preventing market monopolization.
