Sung-yo Moon, Administrator of the Saemangeum Development and Investment Agency (SDIA), stated during a corporate forum on July 22, "Saemangeum has reached a turning point to leap forward as a hub for advanced industries based on large-scale investments from leading companies. We will support this opportunity to lead to regional growth and job creation." SDIA and the Jeonbuk Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced that they co-hosted the 'Saemangeum-Jeonbuk Corporate Forum' for regional economic growth.
The event was attended by Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Yun-deok Kim, SDIA Administrator Sung-yo Moon, executives from Hyundai Motor Group, LS L&F Battery Solution, FutureGraph, and around 100 local business leaders. Discussions focused on Hyundai Motor's investment plans, regional talent cultivation, and SDIA's win-win cooperation strategy.
SDIA presented three main tasks to spread investment benefits across the region: establishing communication channels between large and local firms, building a rental production facility by 2028, and revising regional company preference standards within the year.
While gathering government, corporate, and academic figures at a hotel to discuss win-win cooperation offers a plausible narrative for public relations, skepticism remains.
Critics argue that despite grand slogans about creating a virtuous economic cycle and youth jobs, the proposed measures remain symbolic or delayed until 2028. To achieve real regional integration beyond one-off promotional events, SDIA must establish concrete policy alternatives, such as immediate tax incentives, accelerated infrastructure deployment, and tangible hiring subsidies for local talents.
