'Expiration Date Until 2027?' Growing Consumer Anxiety and Suspicion Over Chinese Imported Confectionery
Unusually Long Shelf Life for Snacks Popular Among Children and the Elderly Raises Eyebrows
Contrasts with Korea's Preference for Fresh Bakery Products¡¦ Urgent Call for MFDS to Verify the Safety and Shelf Life of Imported Foods
[CTN / Society] Reporter Keum Hyeon-ga — Suspicion regarding the safety of imported Chinese confectionery products currently on the market in South Korea is growing significantly among consumers and parents, as their expiration dates (use-by dates) are set as far out as 2027.
It was confirmed that a Chinese confectionery product, "A Tart"—widely sold as a snack for children and the elderly—bears a clear use-by date of March 9, 2027 on its packaging.
Given an unusually long shelf life extending well beyond several months to nearly a few years from the date of purchase, consumers have expressed shock and hesitation to buy the product.
In the domestic food market, bakery goods such as tarts generally have a shelf life ranging from a few days to a few weeks, or at most several months, due to their high moisture content. Given Korean consumers' preference for fresh food, baked goods and snacks that can be stored for years inevitably trigger anxiety regarding heavy preservative use or chemical treatments.
According to the Korean label on the product, it is classified as a "Confectionery" (snack), and direct synthetic preservatives (such as benzoic acid or sorbic acid) are not listed. Instead, it appears that the product relies on high-fat ingredients such as palm oil, alongside refined sugar, malt syrup, and acidity regulators (sodium bicarbonate, glucono-delta-lactone, etc.) to extremely reduce water activity.
However, nutritional imbalances are severe: the product contains 1,020 kcal per 200g total net weight, with saturated fat reaching 47% (7g) and total fat reaching 48% (26g) of the daily recommended value per 100g. This has sparked criticism that a product combining nutritional imbalance with long-term preservation techniques is unsuitable for children and elderly individuals with weaker immune systems.
A greater concern lies in quality and safety during distribution and storage. Even for confectionery with low water activity, products containing high amounts of fat—such as palm oil—face a high risk of rancidity (oxidative degradation) due to temperature fluctuations or exposure to direct sunlight if distributed over a period of 1 to 2 years.
As a result, criticism is mounting against the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) for potential lapses in verification and post-market monitoring—specifically regarding whether the importer submitted valid shelf-life setting reports from the manufacturing country during customs clearance, and whether the product can truly maintain its quality and safety without spoiling through 2027 under Korea's actual distribution environment (seasonal temperature and humidity changes).
Particularly concerning is that most consumers purchasing this product are children or elderly individuals drawn to its low price. Findings show that these consumers purchase the product based solely on its affordability, without paying attention to product details such as the expiration date.
Regarding this issue, one consumer commented:
"These are snacks for children and the elderly, so I was shocked to see an expiration date set for 2027. Even if it cleared official import customs, the MFDS urgently needs to re-verify its quality and safety in a way that aligns with consumer standards and protects public health."
