Byun Seo-yeon of Jeju Shinseong Girls' High School Wins Grand Prize at the 17th 2-Chung 1-Hyo National Creative Writing Contest
[Society / CTN] Reporter Lee Jae-pil = Byun Seo-yeon, a first-year student at Shinseong Girls' High School in Jeju, has won the Overall Grand Prize at the 17th 2-Chung 1-Hyo National Creative Writing Contest for her essay titled . The event was hosted by the Jeokdol Literary Association (Chairman Ga Geum-hyun) and organized by the Chungnam League of the Korea Youth Protection League and the Chungnam Education Newspaper.
As the Grand Prize winner, Byun will be awarded the Chungcheongnam-do Superintendent of Education Award along with a 1 million KRW scholarship provided by the organizers.
Moon Young-suk, chair of the judging committee, highly praised the winning piece. "The Grand Prize-winning work, , is a piece filled with deep empathy and respect for the author's grandfather, who lived his life as a 'Dolchaengi' (a traditional stone wall builder) while carrying the lifelong pain of the Jeju April 3 Incident," Moon stated.
She continued, "The essay calmly portrays the grandfather's life, who, after losing his parents to the Jeju April 3 Incident at a young age, was subjected to the guilt-by-association system. Consequently, the only work available to him was the arduous and dangerous job of building stone walls, which others avoided. However, the realization that the stone walls he so meticulously stacked over the years actually represented his 'family' after his passing evokes deep admiration from the reader."
Moon added, "This piece is both a tribute and a prayer for a grandfather who lived a painful yet diligent life. With the freshness of the concept of 'Dolchaengi,' its profound thematic consciousness, and its power to make everyone living in the modern era reflect on how we view our family members' lives, it was a masterpiece that unanimously resonated with all the judges."
Meanwhile, this is not Byun Seo-yeon's first recognition at this contest. She previously won the Middle School Division Grand Prize at the 14th contest. At that time, she traveled all the way from Jeju Island to the Taean Cultural Center in Chungnam with her family to attend the ceremony, receiving warm applause from the organizers and attendees.
The award ceremony for this year's contest will be held at the same venue, the Taean Cultural Center, on July 24 at 2:00 PM.
