[CTN Literature Corner] From the Execution Ground to the Godfather of Korean Immigrants: Author Moon Young-sook Releases New Book 'Taean, Hawaii, San Francisco'
[CTN News = Reporter Ka Geum-hyun] Author Moon Young-sook has released a inspiring new book titled Taean, Hawaii, San Francisco (Subtitle: The Independence Movement and Korean Language School of Donghak Follower Moon Yang-mok), depicting the life of Moon Yang-mok, the godfather of Korean immigrants in the United States who harbored an unyielding dream of independence through turbulent times.
The book opens with the gripping story of Moon Yang-mok, a 25-year-old youth who stood under the banner of the Donghak Peasant Movement in the early winter of 1894. Following the defeat at the Battle of Hongjuseong Fortress, he was dragged to the execution ground but made a dramatic escape, leaving his hometown of Taean behind. Living as a dockworker in Jemulpo, he endured severe hardships, including forced separation from his family and the tragic loss of his wife to postpartum illness. Yet, he refused to give in to despair.
Driven by the firm belief that "education is the path to saving the nation," he became a village schoolmaster (Seodang Hunjang), teaching children how to read and write alongside the core values of equality and human dignity. Later, upon meeting fellow nationalist leader Park Yong-man, Moon agreed that Korea could only be reclaimed by cultivating real capabilities and power, prompting him to board a ship for Hawaii. However, what awaited him was not a promised paradise, but the brutal labor and systemic discrimination of the sugarcane plantations. Undeterred, Moon headed to San Francisco in search of a larger arena for the independence movement.
Subsequently, spanning both San Francisco and Hawaii, Moon led the Daedong Bogukhoe and worked alongside Ahn Chang-ho to help establish the Korean National Association. He also supported Park Yong-man in founding a military academy and dedicated himself to education by establishing Korean language schools, cementing his legacy as a spiritual leader and educator of the early Korean-American community.
Author Moon Young-sook¡¯s new book, Taean, Hawaii, San Francisco, vividly and movingly reconstructs a massive segment of history—spanning from the Donghak Peasant Movement to the American-based independence movement—through the footsteps of a single extraordinary man.
