신간 '태안, 하와이, 샌프란시스코
[CTN문학관]가금현 기자= 문영숙 작가가 격동의 역사 속에서 멈추지 않는 독립의 꿈을 품고 살았던 미주 한인들의 대부, 문양목의 삶을 그린 신간 『태안, 하와이, 샌프란시스코』(부제: 동학교도 문양목의 독립운동과 한글학교)를 세상에 내놓았다.
이번 신간은 1894년 초겨울 동학농민운동의 깃발 아래 섰던 스물다섯 청년 문양목이 홍주성 전투 패배 후 사형장이라는 절체절명의 위기에서 극적으로 탈출하는 긴박한 이야기로 시작된다.
고향 태안을 떠나 제물포에서 부두 노동자로 고된 삶을 이어가던 그는 가족과의 생이별, 그리고 아내를 산후병으로 잃는 뼈아픈 비극을 겪으면서도 결코 절망에 주저앉지 않았다.
그는 '교육이 곧 나라를 살리는 길'이라는 굳은 신념으로 서당 훈장이 되어 아이들에게 글과 함께 평등, 그리고 인간 존중의 가치를 심어주었다. 이후 민족 지도자 박용만을 만나 '실력을 길러야 조국을 되찾을 수 있다'는 뜻을 같이한 문양목은 하와이 이민길에 오르게 된다. 그러나 낙원일 줄 알았던 하와이에서 그를 기다린 것은 사탕수수 농장의 혹독한 노동과 차별이었다. 문양목은 이에 굴하지 않고 더 큰 독립운동의 무대를 찾아 샌프란시스코로 향했다.

문영숙 작가는 충남 서산에서 태어났다. 2004년 제2회 ‘푸른문학상’과 2005년 제6회 ‘문학동네어린이문학상’을 수상하며 본격적으로 작품 활동을 시작했고, 2012년 서울문화재단 창작지원금을 받았다.

Later, upon meeting fellow nationalist leader Park Yong-man, Moon agreed that Korea could only be reclaimed by cultivating real capabilities and power, prompting him to board a ship for Hawaii. However, what awaited him was not a promised paradise, but the brutal labor and systemic discrimination of the sugarcane plantations.
