[CTN Cultural Section] Remembering Patriot Mun Yang-mok, Who Led the Korean Independence Movement in the U.S. through Donghak Philosophy: Book Concert for 'Taean, Hawaii, San Francisco'
Press/Media: CTN
Reporter: Geum-hyeon Ga
[CTN] A special book concert will be held to honor the dramatic life and fight for independence of Patriot Mun Yang-mok, a monumental figure in the Korean independence movement in North America whose actions were deeply rooted in Donghak philosophy.
Commemorating the publication of author Mun Young-sook's new book, Taean, Hawaii, and San Francisco, the event will take place on Thursday, July 30, at 2:30 PM at the Cheondogyo Graduate School (8th floor, Room 803, Suwoon Building in Jongno-gu, Seoul). Hosted by the Cheondogyo Donghak Educational Institute and organized by Seoul Selection and Munhak TV, the concert will offer audiences a chance to reflect on Mun¡¯s noble spirit and explore the behind-the-scenes creative process of the book.
Patriot Mun Yang-mok was once captured as a Donghak peasant soldier and dragged to the execution ground, only to make a miraculous escape. His journey then unfolded across borders: from Taean to Jemulpo, onward to Hawaii, and eventually to San Francisco, marking a lifelong dedication to the independence movement. In the United States, he led the Daedong Boguk-hoe organization and spearheaded legal defence efforts to support patriots Jang In-hwan and Jeon Myeong-un following the 1908 assassination of Durham Stevens.
Alongside Ahn Chang-ho, he served as President of the North American Regional Headquarters of the Korean National Association, working alongside prominent leaders like Park Yong-man and Lee Dae-wi. Deeply devoted to Donghak thought, he even named his sons Chun-hyeok, Ji-hyeok, and In-hyeok after the core concept of Cheon-Ji-In (Heaven, Earth, and Humanity). In his later years, he dedicated himself to educating future generations by founding a Korean language school.
The book concert will feature vivid storytelling by author Mun Young-sook about her writing process, accompanied by distinguished guest speaker Lim Hyeong-jin (Vice Director of the Donghak Educational Institute and Professor at Kyung Hee University) and moderator Choi Hee-young (CEO of Munhak TV and documentary writer). Additionally, a video congratulatory message from Yoon Hee-shin, Governor of Taean County, South Korea, will enrich the gathering.
