"Protecting Chungnam's Seas Together!"¡¦ 15 Tons of Marine Debris Collected in Cheonsu Bay, Seosan
[Society/CTN] Reporter Geum-hyeon Ga= On Sunday, June 21, the Chungcheongnam-do Volunteer Center (Director Sun-hee Oh) launched its first activity for the "2026 Coastal Clean Relay: Ocean Protected by a United Chungnam" in the Cheonsu Bay area of Seosan. With around 120 volunteers from the Seosan Volunteer Center (Director Kyeong-gu Lee) participating, the initiative successfully removed approximately 15 tons of marine debris.
This event marked the official kickoff of the "2026 Coastal Clean Relay" project, which was selected as a public contest project by the Marine Policy Division of Chungcheongnam-do. Participants carried out environmental cleanup activities by collecting abandoned waste along the shores of Cheonsu Bay to protect the marine ecosystem.
The Coastal Clean Relay is designed to address the marine debris issue on the west coast of Chungnam and raise public awareness about marine environmental conservation. The campaign will run from June to November across various coastal regions in Chungnam, including Boryeong, Asan, Seosan, Dangjin, Seocheon, Hongseong, and Taean.
Notably, this project is operated as a "Voluntour" (Volunteer + Tourism) program. Participants will have the opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the coastal regions while directly contributing to environmental cleanups, allowing them to truly realize the importance of preserving the marine environment.
In addition, the Chungnam Chapter of the Korea Special Mission Veterans Association and the Chungnam Alliance of the Marine Corps Veterans Association joined the cause, conducting underwater cleanup operations using boats and diving equipment. Their involvement will bolster efforts to collect marine litter from underwater areas and remote islands that are difficult for regular volunteers to access.
Furthermore, in celebration of International Coastal Cleanup Day on September 19, the Chungcheongnam-do Volunteer Center plans to expand citizen participation by hosting various programs, such as plogging, resource circulation challenges, and carbon-neutral experience booths.
Sun-hee Oh, Director of the Chungcheongnam-do Volunteer Center, stated, "The ocean is not just a space for coastal residents, but a precious asset connected to all of our lives. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the volunteers who worked hard despite the hot weather to create a clean ocean, and I hope many more citizens will join us in protecting our marine environment."
Meanwhile, through this project, the Chungcheongnam-do Volunteer Center aims to continue its efforts with a target of securing over 2,200 participants, conducting more than 51 marine cleanup activities (including underwater cleanups), and collecting over 30 tons of marine debris.
