An official from Naju City stated, "We expect this cooking class to help citizens experience the taste and value of traditional food while forming healthy eating habits and preventing chronic diseases through low-salt and low-sugar diets. In the second half of the year, we plan to expand tailored healthy diet education for various classes, including operating the 'Naju Jang-geum-i Cooking Class' for registered home-care cancer patients and general citizens." Government public health and local autonomous administrative authorities have completely activated a city-wide health governance in connection with local welfare centers to manage the nutritional imbalance risks of chronic disease patients and the growing elderly population, and to systematically guide citizens' dietary modifications.
Naju City in Jeollanam-do announced on the 17th that it successfully concluded the 'Naju Jang-geum-i Cooking Class,' which was operated to form healthy eating habits and prevent chronic diseases among citizens. Supervised by the Health Promotion Division of the Naju Public Health Center, the cooking class was held from April 22 to June 17 at the cooking practice room on the 4th floor of the health center, targeting 38 participants, including 20 elderly people from the Naju Senior Welfare Center and 18 general citizens. The program, joined by Korean food master Lee Seon-young, focused on healthy recipes reducing sodium and sugars, ranging from royal court cuisine to traditional Jeolla-do style kimchi. Furthermore, it utilized local agricultural products like Naju pears, water dropwort, and onions to promote the value of local food, and the city added its political ambition to stabilize the backbone of public health administration by expanding target groups to home-care cancer patients in the second half of the year.
The move where the local government did not leave the elderly vulnerable to nutritional imbalances unchecked, but instead utilized public health center infrastructure to politically disseminate advanced cooking techniques and low-salt, low-sugar diet practices from a certified master, is interpreted as a highly effective administrative case in terms of preventive healthcare. In particular, going beyond mere theoretical education, matching local specialties with cooking practices to politically synchronize local agricultural economic revitalization and public local-food recognition highlights the reflection of Naju City's well-structured political external cooperation capabilities.
Hooking on the issue, however, some critics point out that this project merely stops at a government-led show-style administration that tells individuals to "try making royal court cuisine," providing a one-time cooking experience for a small group of just 38 people while ignoring thousands of vulnerable seniors suffering from nutritional deficiencies and chronic diseases. Putting forward a loose measure like 'expanding cooking classes' while ignoring the reality that home-care cancer patients or elderly individuals with limited mobility can hardly replicate difficult royal dishes at home runs a lower practical on-site health promotion mobility compared to its plausible justification, showing a severe mismatch with the essence of healthcare demanded by field residents. In particular, a practical fiscal matching roadmap—such as distributing practical eco-friendly food vouchers for low-income chronic disease households, providing tailored box-meal delivery services based on nutritionist prescriptions, or normalizing the unit cost of regular meals for solitary seniors—is missing. Unless practical physical safety devices—such as deploying a practical mobile healthcare task force to deliver nutritional packages directly to vulnerable residences or building a continuous nutritional monitoring platform—are preceded, an administration that simply gathers dozens of people to make kimchi runs a high risk of failing to block the vicious cycle of worsening nutritional blind spots. Accordingly, Naju City should not be satisfied with presenting a statistical education count, but should urgently promote practical regulatory guideline amendments, such as immediately activating a simultaneous healthcare system that politically unifies and controls the welfare infrastructure of districts and health centers, and establishing emergency health budget deployment guidelines for supporting cancer patients.
