¡°One Caring Adult Can Make a Difference¡±: Jeju Youth Counseling and Welfare Center Hosts Special Lecture on Youth Resilience
Expert Emphasizes the Importance of Stable Relationships and Strength-Based Support for Youth in Crisis
[CTN/Society] Reporter Keum-hyun Ka
A stable and supportive relationship with at least one caring adult can play a crucial role in helping young people overcome adversity and grow, an expert emphasized during a special lecture on youth resilience held in Jeju.
The Jeju Youth Counseling and Welfare Center, led by Director Choi Jin-beom, hosted a special lecture on September 16 for youth counselors and practitioners from related organizations in the region.
The lecture featured Professor Kim Hyun-soo of the Department of Psychiatry at Myongji Hospital and focused on strengthening professional capabilities in supporting youth experiencing complex challenges, including academic stress, relationship disconnection, and digital overdependence.
¡á ¡°Resilience Is Not Simply the Ability to Endure¡±
During the lecture, Professor Kim emphasized that resilience should not be understood merely as an individual¡¯s ability to endure hardship.
Instead, he explained that resilience is a dynamic process of adaptation that emerges through the interaction between relationships and the surrounding environment.
He identified ¡°one stable adult who accepts the young person unconditionally¡± as one of the most important protective factors for youth facing crisis.
According to Professor Kim, young people need more than advice to endure difficulties. They need a safe and supportive relationship in which they can feel accepted and understood.
¡á Focus on Strengths Rather Than Deficits
Professor Kim also emphasized the importance of moving beyond an approach that focuses primarily on symptoms, problematic behavior, or deficiencies.
He highlighted the need for strength-based and resource-oriented interventions that identify young people¡¯s strengths, positive childhood experiences, and sources of everyday support.
Rather than viewing youth difficulties only as problems to be solved, he explained that existing positive experiences, relationships, and personal abilities can serve as important foundations for recovery and growth.
¡á ¡°We Will Become the Adult Who Stays by Their Side¡±
A school representative who participated in the lecture said the session provided an opportunity to reflect on how adults respond to young people in crisis.
¡°I found myself reflecting on whether I had simply been telling young people in crisis to ¡®endure,¡¯¡± the representative said.
¡°I will work to become the adult who first recognizes each student¡¯s hidden strengths rather than focusing only on problematic behavior or deficiencies, and who can stand firmly by their side.¡±
¡á Strengthening Community Support for Youth
The lecture highlighted the importance of understanding youth resilience not simply as an individual ability, but as a process supported by schools, counseling centers, and the wider community.
It also provided an opportunity for youth counselors and related practitioners to explore professional intervention strategies based on young people¡¯s strengths and support resources.
The Jeju Youth Counseling and Welfare Center plans to continue various capacity-building programs to strengthen professional expertise in youth counseling and support, while helping young people in crisis discover their potential and grow within stable and supportive relationships.
