Kwon Oh-eul, Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, said, "The sacrifice and dedication of UN veterans is the greatest history of solidarity in the history of the Republic of Korea," and promised, "We will do our best to honorably and gracefully host the final journey of these heroes returning to the embrace of the Republic of Korea, and to fully transmit the noble spirit and value of their service to future generations." This return ceremony will be solemnly held at Incheon International Airport's Terminal 2 Arrivals Hall on the morning of the 26th, reflecting the deep respect of the Republic of Korea toward the late Andre Datcharry and the late Jacques Grisoler, French veterans of the Korean War who willingly dedicated their youth in a foreign land for freedom and peace. Such national-level courtesy goes beyond simple diplomatic etiquette and serves as an important opportunity to remind us where the roots of the peace we enjoy today lie.

The late Andre Datcharry, who is returning to the country this time, voluntarily served as an army soldier in the French Battalion from March 1953 to August of the following year, performing missions in the command post of the 3rd Company. The deceased showed fighting spirit by being wounded twice just before the armistice while fighting in fierce battles, and even after the armistice agreement was signed, he did not return home immediately but remained in the UN French detachment in Seoul to fulfill his responsibilities until the end. It is a natural result that the French Veterans Medal and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation were awarded to those who dedicated themselves before and after the armistice, and future generations should learn the true military spirit through their footsteps.

The late Jacques Grisoler, whose remains are being returned together, is a symbol of special dedication as he volunteered for the Korean War deployment twice. At the time of his first deployment in April 1951, he actively fought in the fiercest battlefields, including the Soyang River Battle and the Heartbreak Ridge Battle, receiving two Bronze Star Medals and citations. Afterwards, he volunteered again for a second deployment and played a major role in the Songgok Battle and the Junggasan Battle. After the war, the deceased served as the 'Keeper of the Flame' to guard the flame of the unknown soldier at the Arc de Triomphe in France. The dedication of the Order of Civil Merit, Dongbaek Medal of the Republic of Korea, and the 'Legion d'Honneur,' the highest authority medal in France, to the deceased who contributed to the Veterans Association proves the value of humanity transcending national borders.

The remains return ceremony, held on the morning of the 26th, begins with Oh Kyung-joon, Director General for Planning and Coordination of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, directly receiving the remains and welcoming the bereaved families and guests. After that, a ceremony will follow where the Ministry of National Defense honor guard lines up solemnly to carry the remains to the transport vehicle. Philippe Bertoux, French Ambassador to Korea, the defense attache, and the families of the heroes will attend the event to keep their places. In particular, Roland Monclar, son of General Monclar, and Patrick Beaudouin, president of the UN French Battalion Veterans Association, accompany them this time, and such vivid exchange serves as an excellent bridge to ensure that the history of the past is not disconnected but carried over to the future generations.

After completing the official schedule, the remains will be moved to the UN Memorial Cemetery in Busan on the afternoon of the following day, the 27th at 2:40 PM, to enter eternal rest. The burial ceremony will be hosted by the French Embassy, and Kang Yun-jin, Vice Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, will attend to see off the final journey of the heroes. Starting with the posthumous burial of French veteran Raymond Bernard in May 2015, a total of 35 UN veterans have been buried in Busan so far, and including the two heroes who returned this time, a total of 37 UN veterans will enter eternal rest in the land of the Republic of Korea. As the number of veterans who wish to be buried in Korea even after their death increases, the authorities bear the task of further upgrading the preservation and burial process of the UN Memorial Cemetery to gracefully protect their final wishes.

Consequently, this remains return ceremony remembers the noble sacrifice of the veterans and at the same time gives a deep resonance on how to inherit the value of peace they left behind. In order not to end as a mere one-time memorial event, the permanent veterans diplomatic system with participating nations should be further consolidated, and national efforts to find and honor forgotten or unrecovered war heroes until the end must be continuously supported.
