충청남도자원봉사센터(센터장 오선희)는 14일 보령시 무창포항 일원에서 대한민국특수임무유공자회 충남지부 회원과 자원봉사자 등 80여 명이 참여한 가운데 '2026 해안 클린 릴레이' 수중·연안 정화활동을 진행했다.
이번 활동에서 가장 눈길을 끈 것은 전문 잠수 자원봉사자들의 수중 작업이었다.
대한민국특수임무유공자회 충남지부 소속 잠수 봉사자들은 직접 바다에 들어가 장기간 해저에 방치된 대형 폐그물과 닻, 통발 등 수중 침적 폐기물 약 2톤을 인양했다.
해안에서도 동시에 정화 작업이 이어졌다. 일반 자원봉사자들은 파도에 밀려온 플라스틱과 스티로폼 부표, 각종 생활쓰레기 등을 수거하며 약 2톤의 연안 쓰레기를 치웠다.
한 번의 정화활동으로 수거된 해양쓰레기는 모두 약 4톤. 단순히 해안가를 청소하는 데 그치지 않고 육상에서 눈에 잘 띄지 않는 해저 침적폐기물까지 제거했다는 점에서 의미를 더했다.
이번 활동은 충청남도 해양정책과 공모사업으로 선정된 '2026 해안 클린 릴레이' 사업의 하나로 추진됐다. 충남 서해안 곳곳에 누적된 해양쓰레기를 줄이는 동시에 도민이 해양환경 문제를 직접 체감하고 보전활동에 참여할 수 있도록 마련된 사업이다.
오선희 충청남도자원봉사센터장은 "폭염 속에서도 해양 생태계 보존과 지역사회를 위해 땀 흘려주신 자원봉사자분들께 깊이 감사드린다"며 "앞으로도 도민과 함께하는 지속 가능한 해안 환경 정화활동을 이어가겠다"고 말했다.
충청남도자원봉사센터의 해양환경 정화활동은 특정 지역에 한정되지 않고 충남 전역으로 확대되고 있다.
센터에 따르면 올해 상반기 동안 충남 15개 시·군에서 840명의 자원봉사자가 참여해 모두 70톤의 해양폐기물을 수거했다.
센터는 오는 11월까지 15개 시·군 자원봉사센터를 비롯해 한밭대학교, 해병대전우회 충남연합회 등 관계기관·단체와 연계해 총 13차례의 정화활동을 추가로 진행할 계획이다.
참여 규모는 약 760명으로, 향후 참여 단체와 봉사 인원도 지속적으로 확대한다는 방침이다.
특히 오는 9월 19일 국제연안정화의 날에는 태안군 유류피해극복기념관 일원에서 대규모 해양환경 행사가 열린다.
'충남이 하나되어 지키는 바다'를 슬로건으로 진행되는 이번 행사에는 도민을 비롯해 시·군 자원봉사센터, 해양환경 관련 기관과 시민단체 관계자 등 500여 명이 참여할 예정이다.
행사에서는 기념식을 비롯해 재능나눔 공연, 탄소중립 및 해양환경 체험 부스, 유류피해극복기념관 관람 등 다양한 프로그램이 마련된다.

The Chungcheongnam-do Volunteer Center, led by Director Oh Sun-hee, conducted an underwater and coastal cleanup operation at Muchangpo Harbor on August 14 as part of the ‘2026 Coastal Clean Relay.’ About 80 members of the Chungnam Branch of the Korea Association of Special Mission Veterans and other volunteers participated in the campaign.
Professional diving volunteers from the Chungnam Branch entered the water and safely recovered approximately two tons of underwater marine debris, including large abandoned fishing nets, anchors and fishing traps that had remained on the seabed for years.
At the same time, other volunteers cleaned the coastline, collecting approximately two tons of plastic waste, Styrofoam buoys and household garbage that had washed ashore.
A total of about four tons of marine waste was removed in a single cleanup operation. The campaign was particularly significant because it addressed not only visible garbage along the shoreline but also marine debris hidden beneath the water.
The cleanup was carried out as part of the ‘2026 Coastal Clean Relay,’ a project selected through a public contest organized by the Chungcheongnam-do Marine Policy Division. The project aims to reduce marine waste along the western coast of Chungnam while raising public awareness of marine environmental protection.
Oh Sun-hee, director of the Chungcheongnam-do Volunteer Center, expressed her appreciation to the volunteers, saying they had devoted their time and energy to protecting marine ecosystems and the local community despite the extreme summer heat.
The center reported that during the first half of this year, 840 volunteers across all 15 cities and counties of Chungnam collected approximately 70 tons of marine waste.
The cleanup campaign will continue through November. The center plans to organize 13 additional activities involving approximately 760 participants in cooperation with volunteer centers across the 15 cities and counties, Hanbat National University, the Chungnam Federation of the Marine Corps Veterans Association and other organizations.
