교육부에 따르면 이번 행사에는 전국 시도별 학생 대표 50명이 참석해 학생 자치 경험을 공유하고 민주적 효능감을 함양하는 시간을 가졌다.

특히 학생들은 학교와 디지털·SNS 환경에서 나타나는 혐오 및 차별 표현 예방을 위한 실천 방안을 주제로 모둠 토의를 진행했다. 최 장관은 현장을 직접 방문해 토의 결과를 살펴보고 우수 모둠을 시상했으며, 전문가 강연과 생태·역사 체험활동이 함께 이뤄졌다. 교육부는 향후 학교 및 시도 단위로 이어지는 '학생 참여 포럼'을 구성해 학생 자치 공론장을 지속 가동하겠다고 덧붙였다.

이처럼 전국 각지의 학생 대표들이 한자리에 모여 SNS상 혐오 표현과 같은 교실 안팎의 현실적인 문제에 대해 토론하고 해결책을 모색하는 자리를 마련한 것은 학생 주도형 참여 활동을 장려한다는 측면에서 긍정적인 시도로 평가된다.

다만 전국에서 소수의 학생 대표만을 모아 1박 2일 일정의 일회성 행사를 개최하고 시상식을 여는 방식은 생색내기용 이벤트 행상이라는 비판을 피하기 어렵다. 연례행사식 연수나 보여주기식 포럼 구성을 넘어, 일반 학생들이 매일 다니는 학교 현장에서 학생회의 교칙 개정권이나 예산 편성 권한을 실질적으로 보장하는 학교 문화 정착이 뒤따라야 할 것으로 보인다.
