[Column by Geum-hyun Ga] Win-Win Cooperation Hotter Than Molten Iron: Hyundai Steel¡¯s 'Dignity of Safety'
Subtitle: A Heavy Message from the 'Heat-Related Illness Prevention Agreement'¡¦ Workers' Health is the Company's Competitiveness
By Geum-hyun Ga (Publisher of CTN)
The season of sweltering heat has arrived. Every summer, industrial sites fight another massive battle against heatwaves. In particular, summer at a steel mill, where red molten iron boils in a giant blast furnace, is an extreme workplace. Heat-related illnesses that threaten the lives and health of workers during this period are no longer a matter to be left solely to individual caution, but a top priority that companies and society must solve together.
Under these circumstances, the recent moves by Hyundai Steel's management and labor are sending a fresh and heavy resonance to the Korean industrial sector. Starting with the Dangjin Integrated Steelworks on the 30th, Hyundai Steel's management and labor held an "Agreement Ceremony for the Prevention of Heat-Related Illnesses in the Sweltering Heat," which will continue sequentially at domestic workplaces including Incheon, Pohang, and Suncheon plants.
This agreement is noteworthy in that it does not stop at a simple formal slogan, but is an "alternative-centered win-win model" that drives practical changes in the field. The message voiced by representatives of labor and management, including Koh Heung-suk, head of the SHE (Safety, Health, and Environment) division, Kang Yeon-chae, head of the production division, and Kong Tae-suk, head of the Hyundai Steel branch of the Korean Metal Workers' Union, was clear: "There is no distinction between labor and management in safety and health activities."
The practical tasks they agreed on are very specific and field-oriented. In addition to expanding cooling facilities and complying with safety regulations for high-heat work, labor and management jointly inspect compliance with working hours for each perceived temperature and the normal operation of cooling fans in the workplace. The expansion of "mobile safety shelters" using large and small buses and fixed rest facilities, and the mobilization of food trucks to provide cool drinks and saline glucose to field workers show the "dignity of safety infrastructure" that a large corporation should have.
A particularly impressive part is the "harmony of digital and emotion." Since last May, Hyundai Steel has been sharing weather information and heatwave working standards in real-time through mobile notification messages. It is spread all-round without alienating even affiliates and partners' workers. Providing a "perceived temperature calculator app" so that workers can calculate their own appropriate rest time, and delivering various safety goods such as cooling work clothes and ice safety hat pads are enough to move the hearts of field workers.
Creating a safe workplace can never be completed solely by a company's unilateral favor or the strong demands of the labor community. Only when labor and management trust each other and consider workers' health as the company's most valuable asset can they bear fruit as a "accident-free workplace."
The hands held by Hyundai Steel's management and labor are emitting the "warmth of coexistence" hotter than the heat of the heatwave. It is hoped that this agreement will spread beyond Dangjin to all industrial sites in Korea, so that not a single worker collapses in the heatwave this summer. We support the aesthetics of grand compromise and practice shown by Hyundai Steel's management and labor to become a new standard for industrial safety in Korea.
