Title: Seoul¡¯s Han River Outdoor Swimming Pools and Water Parks to Open Synchronously on June 19, Extending Nighttime Operations Until 10 PM
[Seoul/CTN] Reporter Keum-hyun Ga= Urban water parks are opening to cool off the blistering summer heat. A total of six outdoor swimming pools and water parks along the Han River in Seoul will open simultaneously on Friday, June 19.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it will operate the Ttukseom and Yeouido swimming pools, as well as the Jamsil, Gwangnaru, Nanji, and Yangwha water parks, for 73 days from June 19 (Fri) to August 30 (Sun). This initiative aims to provide citizen and domestic and foreign tourists with a refreshing leisure space. Jamwon Swimming Pool, which had been widely popular, will remain closed this year due to the construction of a new nature-friendly water park, scheduled to reopen after 2028.
Last year, the Han River water facilities attracted a total of 552,003 visitors. Building on the enthusiastic response to the pilot nighttime openings over the past two years, the city will officially extend its operating hours from 9 AM to 10 PM daily without any closing days for 59 days, from July 3 (Fri) to August 30 (Sun). However, Gwangnaru and Yangwha water parks will close at 6 PM.
Operations will be suspended during severe weather conditions, such as typhoons, heavy rain, or fine dust warnings. Visitors are advised to check the official website of the Mirae Han River Project Headquarters (hangang.seoul.go.kr) before visiting.
With extreme heatwaves anticipated this year, the city has organized specialized cooling programs. These include cold-bath events, nighttime acoustic guitar and orchestra concerts (Ttukseom), the water music concert "Han River Music Pongdang" (Nanji), and tightrope walking experiences and performances titled "Han River Eol-Su! Pongdang" (Jamsil). In addition, on June 18 (Thu), a day before the official opening, Yeouido Swimming Pool will host the "Companion with the Vulnerable" event, offering free swimming and refreshments to 250 local children and youth in need.
Admission fees for the swimming pools are 3,000 KRW for children, 4,000 KRW for youth, and 5,000 KRW for adults. For the water parks, the fees are 1,000 KRW for children, 2,000 KRW for youth, and 3,000 KRW for adults. Entry is free for children under 6. A 50% discount is available for holders of the Dadungi Happy Card (multi-child card), senior citizens aged 65 and older, individuals with disabilities, and national veterans upon presenting valid documentation.
Safety and accessibility infrastructure have also been significantly upgraded. The city installed 138 CCTV cameras for real-time video monitoring and established a rapid response system linking the control room with the public announcement system. Furthermore, 42 English signboards have been placed to accommodate foreign tourists.
To ensure pristine water quality, daily on-site water testing will be conducted alongside weekly detailed inspections. A total of 58 lifeguards and nursing assistants will be stationed on-site with emergency medical equipment. The city will also stringently monitor food stalls and snack bars to prevent price gouging, ensuring a fair consumption environment.
"The Han River swimming pools and water parks are the closest and ideal summer vacation spots within downtown Seoul," said Park Jin-young, head of the Seoul Mirae Han River Project Headquarters. "We will do our utmost to manage water quality, safety, and prices so that both citizens and international tourists can enjoy a safe and delightful summer at the Han River."
