Seosan Mayor Lee Wan-seop has also called for Seosan Civilian Airport to be pursued as a national policy project, with its opening guaranteed in 2028 if the deployment of military forces is unavoidable.
His position is clear:
Seosan Civilian Airport must proceed, and residents must not suffer additional noise damage.
These two principles cannot be compromised.
Must Honam Live While Chungnam Dies?
The Honam semiconductor cluster is a project for the future of South Korea.
Few would deny the importance of developing the semiconductor industry.
But national development cannot be justified by sacrificing the lives and rights of residents in another region.
If a policy seeks to save Gwangju by destroying Seosan, it is not balanced regional development. It is a policy that deepens regional conflict.
The people of Chungnam can no longer be treated as mere supporting actors in national projects.
They have already sacrificed for national security for more than 30 years.
Demanding further noise and property damage is simply too much.
Must Honam live while Chungnam dies?
The government must answer.
If the lives of Honam residents matter, then the lives of Chungnam residents matter equally.
If Gwangju residents’ right to live is important, then Seosan residents’ right to live is equally important.
That is common sense. That is fairness. That is national integration.
The Government Must Guarantee Seosan Airport and Protect Residents
The government must not turn the Gwangju military airport relocation issue into a conflict in which one region is sacrificed for another.
It must listen to Seosan residents, conduct objective impact assessments, and ensure sufficient communication with the community.
Above all, it must guarantee the opening of Seosan Civilian Airport in 2028.
If the airport is abandoned or delayed because of the military deployment, the government cannot escape responsibility.
Measures to reduce noise damage must also be practical and comprehensive.
This is not simply a matter of compensation.
Residents’ health, housing conditions, property rights, and regional development must all be considered.
Seosan Civilian Airport must take off.
Seosan residents must no longer be treated as victims of national policy.
Honam must live, and Seosan must live.
Chungnam must live, and Gwangju must live.
National policy that requires one region to die for another region’s development must end.
The government must listen to Seosan residents’ desperate appeal.
And it must make two clear promises:
“We will guarantee the opening of Seosan Civilian Airport in 2028.”
“We will not impose additional noise damage on local residents.”
Only when these promises are kept can the government’s commitment to national integration and balanced regional development be considered genuine.
We must not sacrifice Chungnam to save Honam.
