Hyun-suk Kang, President of the National Institute of Meteorological Sciences (NIMS), stated on July 22, "Joining the international ozone monitoring network will serve as an opportunity to elevate the quality and international credibility of South Korea's ozone observation data. We will contribute to global ozone layer protection and climate change monitoring." NIMS announced that the Anmyeon-do and Jeju Gosan Regional Atmosphere Watch Stations became the first in Northeast Asia to join EUBREWNET.
Total ozone content is a key climate indicator for tracking the depletion and recovery of the stratospheric ozone layer. NIMS has monitored total ozone using Brewer spectrophotometers in Jeju Gosan since 2009 and Anmyeon-do since 2013, supplying quality-controlled data to the WMO World Ozone and Ultraviolet Radiation Data Centre (WOUDC).
EUBREWNET, established in Europe in 2013 and managed by Spain's State Meteorological Agency, was designated as a contributing network to the WMO Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) program this year. Because the network centered heavily on Europe and North America, East Asian stations were notably lacking. By joining the network, the two Korean stations will receive equipment calibration and remote technical support based on international standards, helping fill East Asia's observational gaps.
NIMS expects that sharing data from these strategic locations will facilitate long-term ozone analysis, satellite observation verification, and international climate research collaboration.
While integrating domestic observation data into a global network and aligning with international standards boosts national standing in climate monitoring, skepticism remains over whether this late entry is being overly packaged as a triumph.
To move beyond simply relying on European-led platforms and overseas calibration support, South Korea must pursue concrete alternatives, such as developing indigenous observation technology and leading an independent East Asian climate monitoring framework.
