Gu Ja-geun, director of the Incheon Fisheries Resource Research Institute, stated, "As the Ganghwa and Eulwang sea areas are the core bases for Incheon's blue crab fishing, I hope this release will lead to practical resource recovery. We will continue to produce and release excellent fisheries seeds suitable for the Incheon coastal environment, including blue crabs, to create a rich Incheon sea." The Incheon Fisheries Resource Research Institute announced that it released 1.7 million young blue crabs over two days in the waters of Eulwang-ri, Jung-gu, and Maeum-ri, Ganghwa-gun, to create abundant fishing grounds and establish a foundation for sustainable fisheries resources.

The release was carried out on a scale of 700,000 crabs in the waters of Eulwang-ri, Jung-gu on June 9, and 1 million crabs in the waters of Maeum-ri, Ganghwa-gun on June 10. The released young blue crabs hatched in the middle of last month and are high-quality seeds with a body length of 1 cm or more, determined to be disease-free and excellent through infectious disease tests by a pathological examination agency. Amid deepening anxiety among fishermen due to the increasing volatility of blue crab catches caused by recent climate change and coastal environmental shifts, the institute expects that the released blue crabs will quickly adapt to the West Sea environment and grow into adults weighing over 230g with high commercial value by the next spring fishing season. Meanwhile, the Fisheries Resource Research Institute plans to additionally release 200,000 young blue crabs in the waters of Yeongheung, Ongjin-gun in mid-July, and sequentially release a total of 3.25 million fisheries seeds of six species in the waters of Ganghwa-gun, Ongjin-gun, and Jung-gu this year.

The local government's large-scale release of high-quality blue crab seeds that have passed infectious disease tests for fishermen suffering from coastal environmental changes and reduced catches, along with a specific future schedule for additional releases and species diversification, is evaluated as an active administrative measure in terms of securing the sustainability of the local fishing economy. In particular, the attempt to maximize the efficiency of resource recovery by conducting intensive releases targeting core fishing bases is encouraging.

However, critics point out that for these large-scale seed release projects to lead to an actual increase in catches rather than ending as one-time input-oriented events, a follow-up monitoring infrastructure that can scientifically verify the survival rate and movement paths after release must be meticulously established. In a situation where environmental obstacles such as rapid water temperature rise in the West Sea, coastal pollution, and marine debris are scattered, genetic marker-based mixed catch rate surveys or release effect analysis systems to figure out how many young blue crabs survive to grow into adults in natural conditions are insufficient. Rather than simply focusing on the short-term administrative performance of the number of released crabs, establishing a smart fisheries resource management system that precisely analyzes the appropriate capacity of each sea area using advanced underwater drones and AI-based marine environmental monitoring sensors and tracks the settlement rate of released fish stocks in real time is cited as a future task to be resolved.
