'2026 World Korean Language Educators Joint Training' to Open¡¦ Fostering Solidarity Across Ministries After 9 Years
- MCST, MOE, MOFA, and OKA to invite around 550 Korean language educators worldwide to COEX on the 13th - Keynote speech on 'The Future of Language Education in the AI Era' and various joint programs scheduled - Minister Choe Hwi-young: "We will drastically expand support and improve the educational environment to meet the growing demand for learning Korean."
[CTN = Reporter Ga Geum-hyun] Korean language educators who connect people-to-people and nation-to-nation by spreading the Korean language and culture across the globe are gathering in one place.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister Choe Hwi-young, MCST), the Ministry of Education (Minister Choi Kyo-jin, MOE), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minister Cho Hyun, MOFA), and the Overseas Koreans Agency (Commissioner Kim Kyung-hyup, OKA) announced that they will co-host the '2026 World Korean Language Educators Joint Training' on Monday, July 13 at COEX in Seoul, with approximately 550 Korean language educators from around the world in attendance.
Since the first joint training session for overseas Korean language educators in 2017, relevant ministries have continuously operated invitation training programs for educators under their respective jurisdictions. This year, in particular, marks the first joint training session across all related ministries in nine years, aimed at enhancing the expertise of overseas educators and strengthening inter-agency communication and cooperation. To this end, the organizations linked their training schedules and jointly prepared the opening ceremony and collaborative programs.
A total of 547 overseas participants are expected to attend the joint training, including 211 local teachers from King Sejong Institutes, 43 Korean language teachers dispatched to overseas regular elementary and secondary schools, 30 Korean language professors from overseas universities, and 263 teachers and principals from Korean heritage schools (Hangul Schools). Meeting together through this integrated training for the first time in nine years, the educators will share various field experiences and best practices, enhancing their sense of solidarity as a global Korean language education community.
Taking this training as an opportunity, the government plans to build a more airtight foundation for Korean language education by expanding King Sejong Institutes, vitalizing Korean language education in overseas primary and secondary schools, supporting overseas Korean language courses, and backing next-generation education for overseas Koreans through Hangul Schools. Furthermore, they plan to continuously expand opportunities for educators to meet and exchange locally so that cooperation between government agencies can effectively translate into field success.
Under the theme "Connected by Korean, We Become Each Other's Story," the opening ceremony will feature a video screening and an opening performance symbolizing the global connection of Korean language educational institutions. The dance team 'Hook,' led by choreographer Aiki, will perform a Bongsan mask dance. Subsequently, Professor Emeritus Jang Dae-ik of Gachon University will deliver a keynote lecture titled "From Speaking to Storytelling: The Future of Language Education in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Era," highlighting the irreplaceable role of Korean language educators in the age of AI.
In the afternoon, participants will share their field experiences through presentations of outstanding educational cases by institution and a story concert. Sun Hyun-woo, CEO of 'Talk To Me In Korea,' a popular Korean language learning platform, will deliver a special lecture on "Learning Korean through K-Pop and Play," introducing practical teaching methods that can be immediately applied in classrooms. A fusion traditional Korean music performance by 'Kim Ju-hong and Noreummachi' and other communication programs will also be offered to encourage networking among educators. For those unable to attend in person, the entire joint training process will be broadcast live via the YouTube channels of the King Sejong Institute Foundation, OKA, and the Korea Foundation (KF).
Following the joint training, a 3- to 4-day intensive training course customized to the characteristics of each institution will take place. Participants will enhance their teaching capabilities and exchange ideas through specialized sessions on Korean language pedagogy, cultural education, and curriculum management.
MCST Minister Choe Hwi-young stated, "The purposes of learning Korean are becoming highly diversified, ranging from interest in K-content like K-pop to studying abroad and employment." He added, "In close cooperation with relevant ministries, we will drastically expand support by improving the educational environment and strengthening the distribution system to actively respond to the surging demand for learning the Korean language."
