Park Yoon-hee, director of the Youth, Women, and Education Bureau of Gyeonggi-do, stated, "I sincerely welcome the visit of the Da Nang youth international exchange delegation to Daegu. I hope that the youth international exchange program will serve as a valuable bridge connecting future generations and further expand friendly cooperation between the two cities. I also hope this event will serve as a meaningful opportunity for young people to understand each other's cultures, develop their capabilities as world citizens, and grow into future global leaders." Daegu Metropolitan City announced that it will hold an international exchange event from June 9th to 12th for four days and three nights, inviting youth from its sister city, Da Nang, Vietnam, to experience Daegu's culture and future industries and share friendship between the youth of both cities. The youth international exchange project with overseas sister cities is a representative international exchange program that has been promoted with various cities such as China and Japan since 2001. It is operated in the form of biennial mutual visits to strengthen youth's global capabilities and expand international exchanges. Da Nang, which established a sisterhood relationship with Daegu in 2018, has been jointly promoting the youth international exchange project since 2024, and in July last year, 15 youths from Daegu visited Da Nang to look around major attractions and experience traditional culture for five days and four nights.
In this year's event, 30 youths from Daegu and Da Nang will participate to visit representative local tourist attractions such as Daegu Aquarium, E-World, and Dongseong-ro, and participate in various cultural exchange programs including visits to the Kjomjirak Development Center and enterprises. In particular, this itinerary includes visiting HD Hyundai Robotics in the National Industrial Complex to introduce the robot industry, a representative future industry of Daegu, and visiting the National Daegu Science Museum and the Future Vocational Education Center to experience advanced science and technology and the future professional world. This is evaluated as a positive attempt in that it overcame the limitations of existing local government-centered youth exchanges, which leaned toward 'short-term tourism' events such as simple landmark tours or traditional culture experiences, and expanded the region's core industrial vision into content for youth exchange.
However, some point out that a sophisticated software design must be supplemented for these industrial inspection programs to lead to organic communication between the youth of both countries or effective career exploration. This is because a one-way plant tour of a major company or viewing science museum exhibits is difficult for overseas youth with language barriers to understand deeply, and there is a concern that it might degenerate into an itinerary for the local government's 'municipal administration publicity.' Alternatives are being suggested that rather than simply showing advanced technology, a 'participatory workshop' infrastructure must precede, where youth from both cities form groups to discuss ideas for solving local community problems using robot technology or share visions for future professions, to maximize the value of public exchange. Daegu City plans to accept such criticisms and suggestions to advance on-site programs so that youth can practically build their capabilities as world citizens through this event, and smoothly solidify various sustainability support systems in the future.
